VPN – Microsoft Surface To create the VPN connection to the University of Exeter network you will need to connect to the secure website and install JUNOS Pulse. This software allows you to connect securely to the University network as if your device was directly connected. IMPORTANT - You will require administrative rights on your computer to complete the initial installation of JUNOS Pulse. These are not required once the installation is complete. Initial setup of VPN service. You will need to install the client software from Junos for the Microsoft Surface. Open a browser and navigate to: https://as.exeter.ac.uk/it/network/vpn/ Choose the Surface Client link, as shown. This will begin a download. Installing Junos Pulse You will be asked whether you wish to save or run the file. We suggest that you click the drop down arrow next to “Save” and choose Save as… Choose where you want to save the file and click Save. Version 1.0 13/02/2014 Locate the JunosPulse setup file which you just saved and double click to launch the installer. Choose Next. Choose Next. Version 1.0 13/02/2014 Choose Finish. Junos Pulse – making the connection Once the installation is finished you can quickly launch the Junos Pulse software by going to your start screen and typing Junos Pulse. Double click or tap to launch the software. Version 1.0 13/02/2014 Making the connection: Click the plus button to add a connection. Enter the following details: Type: UAC or SSL-VPN Name: Exeter VPN Server URL: https//vpnsecure.exeter.ac.uk Click Add Version 1.0 13/02/2014 Now Click Connect. You will be prompted to sign in. Please do so with your own University of Exeter Username and Password. Click connect when ready, You should now have a VPN connection. Version 1.0 13/02/2014 This shows the connection has been successful. There will also be a Pulse system tray icon to confirm the connection has begun. Important information when using the VPN service Once connected, your device will have a secure tunnel to the University network, and will be allocated a University of Exeter network address. It will effectively be treated as directly connected to the University network. You will be able to access various internal resources such as mapped network drives and other internal systems not accessible from outside the University network. Unless specifically requested otherwise, all the network traffic your device generates during an active VPN session will travel via the secure tunnel and the University network. This is useful to know when accessing external resources that will only permit access from known University network addresses. Version 1.0 13/02/2014
