POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE:
AWARDS BOARD AWARDS REVIEW COMMITTEE (AB ARC) CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR
OVERVIEW:
The IEEE Awards Board Awards Review Committee (AB ARC) reports to the IEEE Awards
Board, a standing committee of the IEEE Board of Directors.
The AB ARC shall be responsible to the Awards Board for conducting an ongoing review of
the vitality of the IEEE-level awards portfolio and performance to ensure widespread
coverage in the fields of interest to the IEEE; reviewing new award proposals and providing
recommendations for the establishment of new IEEE-level awards that are relevant to
current and emerging IEEE fields of interest; and providing recommendations for the
discontinuance of IEEE-level awards that are no longer relevant to the technical interests of
IEEE members.
Term of Office: One year with a maximum of three consecutive terms. The chair may
serve a one year term as Past Chair.
ROLES:
CHAIR
 Serve as Member of the IEEE Awards Board;
 Serve as Member of the IEEE Awards Board Operating Committee;
VICE CHAIR:
 Serve as Chair of the AB ARC Subcommittee for Selection Committee Review
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITES:
CHAIR:
 Appoint an AB ARC Vice Chair;
 Chair the meetings of the AB ARC and facilitate discussion;
 Collaborate with staff to develop the agenda and materials for meetings;
 Advise IEEE societies and others of AB action on their proposals for establishment of
new awards;
 Submit reports to the AB Chair on AB ARC activities to be included on AB meeting
agendas;
 Collaborate with staff to ensure that minutes of the meetings are recorded and


distributed to committee members;
Participate in all meetings as an active and engaged member of AB, AB
Operating Committee, and AB ARC;
Submit recommendations to the AB Nominations and Appointments Committee
for next year committee members and potential future members.
VICE CHAIR:
 Perform such duties as may be assigned by the Chair;
 Assume the duties of the Chair in his/her absence;
 Chair the AB ARC Subcommittee for Selection Committee Review, appoint two
members (in consultation with the AB ARC Chair), and facilitate the subcommittee’s
assessment of selection committee’s proposed rosters in meeting diversity

guidelines;
Participate in all meetings as an active and engaged member of AB ARC and
the ARC Subcommittee;
In collaboration with the AB ARC Chair, submit recommendations to the AB
Nominations and Appointments Committee for next year committee members and
potential future members.
ELIGIBILITY:

Must be an IEEE member in good standing;

Must hold IEEE Senior Member Grade or higher (for Chair);

Preferred prior service on an IEEE Awards selection committee.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of the IEEE-level awards structure;

Prior involvement in awards activities preferred;

Knowledge of IEEE-bylaws and policies;

Knowledge of one or more of the IEEE technical activities;

Knowledge of the workings of the Awards Board;
 Working knowledge of the IEEE and its fields of interests, activities, mission,
structure, goals, needs, and direction;
 Honesty, integrity, and adherence to high ethical standards;
 Excellent leadership skills including the ability to motivate others; negotiate
compromise and resolve differences; maintain positive working relationships and
capability to set direction;
 Sensitivity to and tolerance of differing views, a friendly, responsive, and patient
approach, and community-building skills;
 Ability to listen, analyze, think clearly and creatively, work well with people
individually and in a group;
 Capability to focus on strategic issues and make effectiveness a top priority;
 Ability to manage the activities of the committee within the scope of its charter;
 Ability to clearly and comfortably delegate and broadly share both responsibility and
accountability;
 Excellent communication skills;
 Sound decision making skills to make timely decisions based on knowledge, analysis
and judgment;
 Ability to meet deadlines and respond to communications in a timely fashion;
 Ability to facilitate and run meetings efficiently, including familiarity with
parliamentary procedures such as the basics of Robert's Rules of Order; and
 Prior relevant volunteer experience.
