Hope Mills Stormwater Clean water, Clear choice. This fall, don’t leave the leaves! Fall is just around the corner bringing cooler temperatures and beautiful colors from changing leaves. However, these leaves can cause major problems for storm drains if not disposed of correctly. Leaves can plug storm drains causing flooding. They also cause more nutrients and organic matter to run into our local waterways which leads to algal blooms. Too much algae in the water uses up all of the water's oxygen and causes fish to die. What can you do? There are some simple things you can to do protect our streams from excess leaves and yard waste: 1. In the Hope Mills town limits, yard waste is picked up on Wednesdays. Yard waste must be bagged for pickup. 2. NEVER rake leaves or yard waste on top of or into storm drains. 3. As an alternative, compost your leaves for fertilizer for your garden or lawn. 4. Use a mower to chop leaves into small pieces and apply directly to your lawn. Adopt a drain! There are still hundreds of drains that need to be adopted within the Town. The Adopt-A-Drain program is an easy and very effective way to get involved in your community and help improve local water quality.
