Why are some areas so sparsely populated? 3 of 8 © Boardworks Ltd 2016 Sparsely and densely populated areas Whether a place becomes densely or sparsely populated can be affected by different factors. Physical geography. This relates to patterns that exist within the natural environment as opposed to man-made features, e.g. climate. Human geography. This relates to features of man’s interaction with the environment, e.g. economic and social change.
