Lunar Phase Simulator
To prepare for the NMSI Moon Watch activity, you will watch a simulation of a lunar
cycle.
1. Use the lunar phase simulator created by the University of NebraskaLincoln Astronomy Education Group, found online at
http://astro.unl.edu/naap/lps/lps.html
2. Start the simulation by clicking “start animation” located under
Animation and Time Controls.
3. Watch as the moon completes one cycle.
4. After watching the simulator, ask yourself the following questions
• Does every waxing crescent look the same?
Every waning gibbous?
• Do the terms crescent and gibbous refer to a specific phase of the
Moon?
• What is the difference between a new moon and a full moon?
• Can you think of factors not accounted for in this model?
5. A t the end, we will discuss the questions as a class.

Moon Phase Skitbot
You will share your knowledge of phases using the Skitbot app. You will upload your
video to Blackboard. You will view and comment on videos from other classes.
1. Draw a picture for each moon phase.
2. Use the Skitbot app to make a movie showing the correct order of the
moon phases.
3. Save your video to the camera roll on the iPad.
4. Upload your completed video to the Discussion Board link in
Blackboard.
5. On Blackboard, you should compare your video with videos from other
