All matches for this competition will be played on the indoor courts located in the Mount Gravatt Campus
Recreation Hall (Building M12).
MATCH DURATION
Regular Rounds
Matches will begin with a 5minute warm up. Matches will then run for 3 x 12 min thirds with 2 minutes at
each break, where teams must change ends.
Match Schedules
Matches will be played every 50 minutes. Therefore you may be required to play in any of the following
match timeslots:



Competition Rules

RULE 1 - Players Responsibility
All players are responsible for reading and understanding the rules contained herein.
If there are any rules that are not clear please discuss these with the referee prior to the commencement of
the game or at half time. Due to the time constraints of this competition the referees will not clarify rules
or rulings during the game.
RULE 2 - General
Unless otherwise stated in these rules, normal volleyball rules apply as outlined by the Fédération
Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). All rules are open to the interpretation of the referee and their decision
is final.
RULE 3 - Number of Players
a) A team may not have a squad greater than ten players with only six players allowed on the court at
any one time.
b) There must be a minimum of 2 members of either sex on the court at all times for the mixed
Competition.
c) 4 players is the minimum number of players that a team can have without a forfeit resulting.
Teams may commence games with four players provided there is at least 1 member of each sex is
on the court at all times. This is the only time rule 3 b) may be broken.
d) In the event that rule 2(a), (b) or (c) are broken and the referee doesn't immediately notice, any
points scored by the offending team during this time shall be disallowed and possession will be
awarded to the opposition.
RULE 4 - Interchange
Teams must rotate players through positions at each change of service (see image below). Each team is
only allowed one substitution at a time, and must take place of the server (Position 1).
When substituting, teams must changeover behind the baseline.
Server rotation – A server is only allowed a maximum of eight (8) continuous serves.
RULE 5 - Game Duration

Games consist of 3 by 12 minute thirds with each break between thirds not exceeding 2 minutes. No clock
stoppages will be made except under exceptional circumstances. Such circumstance will be at the sole
discretion of the Referee and Competition Manager.
No time outs are allowed.
If a game commences late (and is not deemed a forfeit - see rule 3) then it still must finish at the scheduled
time. If such a circumstance arises, the thirds may be shortened. Again, this is at the discretion of the
Competition Manager.
RULE 6 - Game Commencement
Teams should arrive 15 minutes prior to the commencement of their match to allow for smooth transition
of games. Any teams that are not ready to commence play with a minimum of 4 appropriate players (see
Rule 3) 5 minutes after the referee has signalled the match can start will incur a forfeit loss (Please refer to
competition forfeit guidelines for clarification).
Note that as this competition is social, the game may go ahead after 5 minutes, however the 0-5 loss will
stand regardless of the actual score. In all circumstances the game must finish at the scheduled time.
*The 5-minute warm up is not deemed as match time
Rule 7 – Scoring
How to win the match
The winner of each match goes to the team who wins two out of three sets.
If both teams have won one set each and points are equal at the end of the final third, the match will be
claimed a draw.
How to win a set
A set is won by the team who has scored the most points in the designated time period.
How to win a point
If a team fails in its serve, fails to return the ball, or commits any other fault, the opposing team wins the
rally.
The team who wins the rally will win the point and either continues to serve or gains the right to serve
RULE 8 – Bonus Points
Competition points in Volleyball are as per current competition guidelines however there are bonus points
available on offer.
There are two ways in order to gain bonus points:
- Win the match in the first two sets
- Score 20 or more points in a set
- You may only be able to receive a maximum of three (3) bonus points
RULE 9 - Uniforms
Teams must be in correct uniform. All players in a team must wear the same colour. Numbers are not
compulsory.
RULE 8 - Finals
If the match is drawn at full time in a finals match the set will continue without break until one team has
succeeded the other by two points.
Substitutions will continue as per normal rules.
