“Getting Ahead” &
SVdP’s Mentoring Program
 “Getting Ahead” is the cornerstone of the
SVdP mentoring program
 “Getting Ahead” helps create the motivation
and the personal power to build a plan for
change & improvement
 The personal plans built in GA become the
focal point for the ongoing support provided
by SVdP mentoring teams
Mentoring Program Roles
Candidate / Investigator / Graduate
Not simply the object of the Mentoring Program but its
primary driver. The program goal is for the person to
transform their lives to be more stable, self-directed, and
self-sustaining.
Co-Facilitators
Guide the Getting Ahead process by working with a group
(6 to 10) of Investigators. A class-time resource for
Investigators.
Mentors
Coach the Candidate through the entire process. Are there
to relate, affirm, and facilitate community connections.
Will never do what the person is capable of doing for
7
themselves.
Mentoring Program - Process
3 Stages:
Acceptance
Getting Ahead – “Develop Future Story”
Implementation
View through Participant Lens
Hope in Action…ending poverty through systemic change
Stage 1: Acceptance
 Candidate:
 Learns of mentoring program and makes contact
 Meets with 2 mentors to discuss program features,
benefits, expectations, and address questions
 Addresses fundamental issue: Are they willing to
undertake a process that will challenge them to
change?
Candidate makes decision to continue or not.
Hope in Action…ending poverty through systemic change
Stage 2: Getting Ahead
 Candidates become Investigators in GA:
 Develop ‘mental models’ regarding their
current situation
 Learn about poverty, hidden rules, & change
 Assess their own & community resources
 Develop their “future story”
 Develop a plan to build resources and
achieve their “future story”
© aha! Process, Inc.
Stage 2: Getting Ahead
 Candidates:
 Learn from each other
 Form a peer support network
 Facilitators guide the process
 Mentors provide encouragement
Demonstrates the power of working together
in a community
© aha! Process, Inc.
Stage 3: Implementation
 Investigators:
 Work to achieve their “future story” through
building their personal resources
 Look to mentors for:
 Support & encouragement
 An ear to listen and a voice to help guide
 Connection to others to help build personal
resources (“bridging capital”)
Investigators set the pace. They’re responsible for
own progress

 A team of 2 Vincentians
 Coaches, Friends, Cheerleaders, Connectors
 Not counselors or experts
 Facilitate community connections that enable

Philosophy
 Poverty & chronically unstable environments
trap people in the “tyranny of the moment”
 People in poverty are problem solvers
 Abstract thinking enables investigators to
detach from their problems, objectively
analyze solutions, and proactively plan to
make changes.
Pages 2 - 5

Philosophy (cont’d)
 Poverty is caused by more than individual
choices
 It’s important to learn how poverty impacts
individuals…understanding hidden rules,
resources, and language issues is critical
 Self-assessment of personal and
community resources helps people make
plans for change

Philosophy (cont’d)
 GA’s information and group discussions
help people build resources and develop
their future story
 Partnerships with middle class & wealth will
build critical social capital
 Developing strategies to address poverty
comprehensively at the institutional and

The Kitchen Table
Learning Experience
What happens in Getting Ahead?
 A group of 6–12 meet for a kitchen-table
learning experience.
 Use the “triangle” as a learning structure.
 16-20 sessions, done once or twice a week.
 Each session takes about three hours.
 Investigators are “paid” for their work.

Process: Recruiting
 Can be for anyone living in poverty – across
the stability continuum
 But, not everyone is ready at this time
 Diversity of backgrounds can make discussion
richer
 No coercion
Pages 6 - 8
 Use your mentoring teams for pre-GA contacts
to explain the program, its expectations, and
how it connects to our mentoring program after

Keys to Success: Process Constructs
 Co-investigation by investigators & facilitators
 Safe environment & group rules
 Half of learning from content…half from
discussion
 GA’s sequence – illustrated in the Process
Triangle - continually reinforces learning &
change philosophy
 Two storylines throughout – collective poverty
experience (community) and personal
 Separate the problem from the person

investigator:

Facilitator & Investigator Roles
Getting Ahead is different because:
 Investigators are recognized as a problem
solvers.
 Investigators’ ideas and information are needed.
 No one decides anything for the investigators or
tells them what to do.
 No one will do for the investigators what they
can do for themselves.
 No one will “teach”; Investigators do the
learning.
