The Youth Theater of Uzbekistan gets ready for THEATRE.UZ/2013
Not getting regained from those happy excitements experienced by the participants of the project of
the 3rd International Theater Festival at the closing ceremony of the 7th Art Week Style.Uz in Tashkent,
they have been plunged into the preparations to the next, the 4th International Theater Festival that is
organized under the assistance of the Fund Forum.
2
Throbbing, as the source of perpetual energy for creative enthusiasm, a key ‘stem of activity’ of the
theater, the Honored Worker of Arts of Uzbekistan, art director Nabi Kayumovich Abdurahmonov, even to
the close of the day, is still full of energy and constantly on the move within the walls of his favorite
brainchild – the theater.
Waiting patiently for my turn to interview the master, I observe how he checks the beginning of a
play, gives some instructions to costume designers, and then, making gestures talks inspiringly about new
projects with stage designers. In short, he is able to note and keep an eye on everything happening within
the theater.
Before our conversation, he politely notifies me that the interview will be with some interruptions as
he should also watch the process on the stage. The interview starts keenly, as like he has been doing nothing
by then. So much energy in this person!
Nabi Kayumovich, how do you cope with this tempo? From where do you get so much energy?
“This is such a notion as ‘book’ theater. It was a model of theater we were taught at the Institute,
what and how it should be like. Yet, with adjustments of life and circumstances, a real theater exists. And, I
can say that coincidence of these two notions in life, and, probably, a perpetual moving forward helps us
getting closer to high ideals, and we should not stop even for a minute. It is impossible to gain everything,
however, we have to do what we consider important each day, from day to day, and that is the strategy.”
Congratulations on the successful completion of the 3rd International Theater Festival. What does
give the three-year experience of working within the festival to you and your theater?
“The international theater process exists, and theaters in each country have their own path and
worldview. It is wonderful, yet to partake in International festivals beyond Uzbekistan means only partially
‘plunge into’ the common theater movement. And, it is quite different to ‘bring in’ this process here, to the
republic. We could not take our whole color abroad, all those richness of the national identity of the Uzbek
culture and art. It is impossible to put into several cases the adequate notion about the whole versatility of
our country with its heritage, cultural and universal values.
In a word, organizing the festival within the country, we not only gain invaluable experience, but all
those involved could feel and appreciate the incredible potential and diversity of our theater phenomenon.
He we understand that we go on one big way of art. I do appreciate the helping hand of the country, the
Forum of Culture and Arts of Uzbekistan Foundation that supported me in my beginnings and gave birth to
the Festival, which turned to have so many prospects for the creative youth and art workers.”
What is the key goal of the work of the Festival within the Art Week Style.Uz?
“The goal of the International Theater Festival in Uzbekistan is not the display of achievements, but
the process.
The main thing is that our youth could get involved in it fully, understand and see it from inside, up
to technical details in making a play, as the art object, and comparing their work with the work of colleagues
from foreign countries.
Conducting workshops, joint meetings in the process, sharing information and experience – all this is
important.” (Source: Uzbekistan Today newspaper)
