Year 4 Term 4 2016/17
We are over half way through the year already! We hope that this term will be another fantastic one, with lots of learning taking place. Below, we have
outlined the areas we will be covering this term. Remember, if you have any questions please feel free to speak to us between 8:50 and 9:00am or at the end of
the school day.
Trip
We will be going on a local trip to Snuff Mills to look at the river and create sketches in the week beinning Monday 20th March. More details to follow.
English
In English this term we will be reading ‘Oliver and
the Seawigs’, a Quest story. The children will then
be working towards creating their own Quest
stories.
Later in the term, the children will also create some
poetry, based around our water topic.
Maths
In maths this term we will be consolidating multiplication and division
knowledge and skills before moving onto fractions and decimals.
This will be the first time that the children
will have really encountered decimals so they
may well find it tricky at first. We will also be
finding equivalent fractions. The children will
also learn to recognise and convert fractions
to decimal numbers.
In our writing, we will focus on consistency in grammar, spelling and
punctuation, encouraging children to use a range of sentences within their
writing.
Science/Geography – The Water Cycle
This term we will be learning about the Water Cycle. We will be using the scientific vocabulary: evaporation,
condensation, precipitation, solids, liquids, gas. This links nicely to the States of Matter work that we did last
term.
Topic
Art – The children will be considering how artists create atmosphere in art work that incorporates water. They
will develop their thoughts and preferences when discussing art work by existing artists. They will lern to colour
mix and consider the impact that different colours can have. They will finally go on to create their own artwork,
aiming to create a sense of atmosphere within the art.
Your child will need their PE kit on a Monday and Wednesday but it would be beneficial if they could keep it in school
for the week just in case!
Your child will be tested on their spellings on a Wednesday.
Each week, the children will have an opportunity to show how their multiplication knowledge is developing.
Remember, by the end of year 4, all children are expected to know their times tables up to 12x12. We will need your
help throughout the year to support this at home.
Homework is handed in on a Wednesday
Homework is given to your child on Friday.
As you are aware, it is very important that your child reads at home, as well as in school. Your child will bring a
levelled reading book home and we ask that your child’s reading record is signed as often as possible. Your child will
only be allowed to change his/her book when their teacher has seen their reading record signed. 15 minutes every
night will really help your child’s learning in school.
Please remember that the Oxford Owl is always available if your child would like to read something different or leaves
their book at school. The log-in details are:
