Hi all,
Congratulations on embarking on the Gold adventurous journey section of your Duke of Edinburgh’s
Hillary Award. The first step of this section is training, to help you have the base training for being in
the New Zealand bush.
Location and equipment Information
Please meet us on the following day:
Sunday 2 April 2017 7.30am-5pm, at Arataki Information Centre, 300 Scenic Drive, Waitakere.
Please bring all of your tramping gear with you
http://www.aucklandchallenge.org.nz/journey-registration.html
What to expect throughout the day
The focus for the day is training not tramping however please be prepared to do both,
this is scenario based training which you will be participating in and it will be expected
that you treat each scenario as reality. Please bring EVERYTHING that you would take
tramping over night with you (should have a full pack. An emergency shelter will be
provided so you do not need to bring a tent). We will be in the Arataki area using the
maps that YOU bring. Please make sure you bring a topographical map these can
accessed by http://www.nztopomaps.com/, you will need easting’s and northings
marked as the scenarios are set at grid reference points and this is part of your
navigational assessment.
How to print the maps you need for training.
Your first task of training is to print out a map of the area we will be in on Sunday. The maps need
to be waterproofed so they are readable, no matter what the weather.
1.
Go to http://www.nztopomaps.com/ or www.topomap.co.nz/
2. In the “search address” in the upper left hand side of the page box type in the location you
are looking for. In this case it is Arataki Visitor Centre, Scenic Drive, Oratia
3. Check that the map includes the following tracks If it does not, you may need to either zoom
in or out to see them.

4. Print out 2 copies of the map to bring with you on Sunday
5. Please write down as much information about YOUR map that you think you will
need. (Eastings, Northings, Scale, Legend/Key)
The route you will be following
Arataki Nature trail (large loop going clockwise back to Arataki)
Slip track
??????? (unnamed rd) so use from one grid reference to another
Exhibition Dr
Beveridge track (is not marked on some maps yet, so you will need to use grid
references to mark)
This map does not suffice for you to navigate with

What do you need to bring for the day?
All your tramping gear, there is a gear list at the bottom of
http://www.aucklandchallenge.org.nz/journey-registration.html
Food for the day
Food wise, you will need to have already had a good breakfast, and bring lunch and
your emergency food.
You must cook your own lunch (no group cooking) time limit 20mins to cook, eat and
clean. This is to expand on what you have made previously and stretch your menu for
tramping cooking. As well as been assessed on your safety skills with a cooker. No pre
prepared food (pizza from the night before, etc)
Suggestions but definitely not limited to for this is spaghetti Bolognese, stir fry, steak
sandwich, toasted sandwiches, pancakes.
Prior to the day
You need to fill out the Journey approval form, Route card, Risk assessment and Critical
management these are all attached in one document.
Please complete as much of the forms attached that you are able too. The forms
attached and bring 2 copies of them along with you 1 copy for your use during the day
the other will be checked by someone else while you are out on the training. I
recommend you fill out the forms electronically as they are very similar to what you need to fill
out for the rest of your journeys (copy and paste is a great function). Also for the risk
management some of the reduction strategies can be the same.
