Newletter Term 2 - Birdsville State School

ATTENDANCE
The month of May saw the Birdsville State School was 90.4%. This attendance rate was below the whole state target of
96%. This year we will look closer at the attendance data and track every student. Every day off in a small school is
magnified, due to such small enrolment numbers. Every day that one student is away, our daily attendance falls to 80%.
This doesn’t include sick days with a doctor’s certificate provided to the school.
Every day that our students are at school, is another day that our students are learning and improving. We appreciate
your support in our endeavour to achieve improved attendance in 2017.
BEHAVIOUR
Term 1 saw the students hitting new targets with their stamp diaries. Students exceed the minimum requirement
of 100 stamps by the end of term, with some of them getting close to 130 stamps. . Term 2 has not been much
different, with students already up to 90 stamps with 2 weeks left to go..
Parents are encouraged to view their student’s diary daily and sign at the end of the week.
Positive behaviour systems work well when all stakeholders work together.
INTERESTING FACTS
What's your learning style?
Read through these to see if you can find out which ways you learn best.
Visual learning - see and remember
It is believed that most people learn by watching. Visual learners remember what they have seen. They like to see, in
some way, what they are learning, they like to make notes, diagrams, draw or doodle to help them remember what they
are learning. They like to see written instructions or be shown how to do something. They may find it difficult to
remember what they are hearing unless they can see something to help them make sense of it.
Auditory learning - listen and remember
Auditory learners learn through listening. They remember by talking about what they have heard. They need to hear
explanations of what they are learning and how to do things. They may not find it so easy to work out what to do when
things are written down, and like to have someone explain what to do. They may talk out loud to themselves when they
are learning. They usually enjoy working in a group or having group discussions.
Reading and writing - reading then writing to remember
These learners are also visual style learners. They like to read what they are learning. They like to write things down.
They like to find out where the knowledge comes from (reference). They like doing projects!
Kinesthetic - exploring building and taking apart to remember
These learners are very 'hands on'. They want to do things for themselves. They like to move about when they are
learning. They use their hands to explain things. They like to touch things, make things, or take things to pieces to find
out how they work.
Remember that you may use different styles depending on what you are learning but you will have one major style which
suits the special person that you are.

Term 2
Term 2 was off to a flying start and still we are on a roll. With only 2 weeks left of class,
and Week 10 in Windorah, we are slowly running out of time.
This term we had other Principals and Teachers from Windorah and Jundah come to visit
us, with Fiona Connor for Instructional Rounds. These ladies came out to see how our
school is run, and the different ways we teach her in Birdsville. This was a very
productive visit as everyone involved learnt a lot.
This term has seen us integrate the Kindy Program into the classroom with the other
students. We have seen that this task has been a very successful one. All students are
enjoying working together, and all students are benefiting from it in their own very special
way. It has been great to see how it is working out.
Unfortunately, at the end of Term 2 we will see Mrs Warner leave us here at Birdsville
State School as she heads back to Ipswich to be with family. All the staff and students
are sad to see her go, but wish her all the best with whatever it is she chooses to do next
with her Teaching Career. All staff and students would like to thank Mrs Warner for all of
her hard work she has put into the school and students over the past 2 years. We sure
will miss her bubbly personality and bright smile every day.

Visit from Senior Constable Stephan Pursell
This week, we set up a crime scene in the classroom, and Stephan came in and made
the students Junior Detectives to help him solve the crime! This saw the students working
together as a team to find clues and investigate. Here are pictures of the students
learning from Stephan what to do!
