Bronzeville Community Garden™ Leadership Team
wins Mayor Daleyʼs GreenWorks Award
Bronzeville (December 2, 2010) - The Leadership Team for Bronzeville Community
Garden™ triumphed last night at the awards ceremony for Mayor Daleyʼs GreenWorks
Awards. The team was honored with the 2010 Award for Community Leadership for its
work in establishing the Garden, the first of six culinary venues that are being developed
at 51st Street and the CTA Green Line as part of the Bronzeville Cookinʼ™ initiative.
Team members receive the GreenWorks Award from Suzanne Malec-McKenna, Commissioner of the Department of
Environment. From left: Chef Tsadakeeyah, Malec-McKenna, Natasha Tarpley, Ramona Westbrook, Bernard Loyd,
and Ryan Rohlfs (not present are Michael Beavers, Mecca Brooks, Madiem Kawa, Indrani Peyton, Latrice Williams)
Sponsored by the Urban Juncture Foundation, the Garden was created to educate and
engage Bronzeville residents around issues of sustainability and conservancy, food, and
nutrition. Facilitating positive neighborhood interaction and beautifying the community,
the Garden is a model for environmentally sound practices in both its structural and
agricultural components. By involving residents in the development process and
ongoing activities, the Garden has become a means of educating residents about
sustainability and providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to become
more environmentally conscious stewards of their community.
The Garden incorporates production beds, a Chefʼs Pavilion, a Public Performance
Patio, the Bronzeville Butterfly Sanctuary, the Habib art exhibit, a communal dining
table, and several game stations. Neighborhood residents have embraced it, including
a seniors dominoes group that has established all-weather residency at one of the
game tables.
The Garden is a member of the Bronzeville Alliance Green Network and the Openlands
HomeGrown Chicago Food Garden Network. Garden supporters include Urban
Juncture, Inc., CEDA, Brook Architecture, Majani310™, the Rebuilding Exchange,
Openlands, and GreenCorps.
