Salmon ice fishing has produced some good results recently. Additionally, bass and pickerel have been caught in good numbers. A few interesting points: Salmon and pickerel mature more quickly Salmon usually live only 5 to 7 years and most are stocked by the state. They metabolize faster than bass and with proper forage mature much faster. Smallmouth bass mature much slower and can live up to 28 years. A 4lb smallmouth is probably well over 20 years old. A 3lb. salmon may be four years old. If you catch a bass through the ice release it immediately so its eyes do not freeze. Bass, which are not stocked, can be caught over and over again if handled properly over their long lifespan. Salmon will not take a lot of being caught over and over and released. If you catch a 3.5 lb. salmon in Kezar chances are that fish will die within a year because it has matured. And as we all know, salmon are delicious to eat!
