Ergonomic SCADA solutions for safe railroad and
tunnel infrastructures
At InnoTrans 2014, the automation specialist COPA-DATA will present
solutions for the reliable monitoring and ergonomic control of substations
and tunnel infrastructures, as well as efficient energy and media supply.
Thanks to SIL 2-compliance, infrastructure operators can guarantee the
safety integrity of their systems and implement all necessary safety
functions.
Unrestricted communication and redundancy are an essential part of
complex automation environments for reliable and secure processes. With
the software systems zenon and straton, COPA-DATA offers products that
provide optimum support for system integrators when implementing railroad
and infrastructure projects. zenon takes on the role of a control system in
the process and makes it possible to monitor and control railroad and tunnel
systems in a modern way, to portray the traffic management systems and
the traffic management as well as guaranteeing energy and media supply
(electricity supply, ventilation, CO2 measurement, etc.).

At InnoTrans 2014, visitors can see for themselves the advantages of
zenon SCADA software as well as the IEC 61131-3 based, platformindependent straton PLC system, by means of a demo project. zenon
SCADA software is optimally suited to power station and substation
automation, grid control systems, railroad traffic systems and tunnel
automation. The drivers developed by COPA-DATA guarantee adherence
to international standards such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870, DNP3 and
Modbus. Other highlights include comprehensive topology functions,
secure command input and flexible, effective alarm management. In
addition, COPA-DATA is developing its software in accordance with the
formalities of the Safety Integrity Levels (SIL), which is increasing in
importance for railroad electricity supply and tunnel systems. Furthermore,
zenon allows the integration of GIS data. Thanks to the seamless
integration of straton, zenon becomes a comprehensive solution for railroad
traffic systems and tunnel automation. straton is used as both a soft PLC
on the control system PC as well being operated as embedded variants in
RTUs (Remote Telemetry Units) and other IEDs (Intelligent Electronic
Devices).
Safety precautions in accordance with SIL 2
Safety has the highest priority for the operators of railroad and tunnel
technology. In order to preclude risks and malfunctions of the systems as
far
as
possible,
companies
can
have
their
electrical/electronic/programmable electronic (E/E/PE) systems evaluated
in terms of the reliability of safety functions. The "Safety Integrity Level"
(SIL) indicates, in levels 1 to 4, the extent to which the safety integrity is
guaranteed and the extent to which the safety functions are met –
depending on the potential risks and dangers that arise from systems,
devices and processes. The specification, concept and operation of safetyrelated systems is based on the IEC 61508 standard. COPA-DATA has the
corresponding expertise to set up SIL 2-compliant processes and SIL 2compliant systems and thus support customers in the SIL certification of
their equipment.
