Standing Committees:
Elections:
The GPSA Elections Committee organizes, supervises, and announces the results of the annual
GPSA Election. The General Election for the GPSA President are held each April through an
electronic ballot process. At this time, amendments to the GPSA Constitution, as accepted by
Council, must also go before the graduate and professional student body for a vote.
Finance:
The Finance Committee organizes the annual GPSA budget, then works with the GPSA President
and officers to keep a balanced budget. The committee also makes recommendations to the
Legislative Finance Committee regarding appropriations requests as well as, supervising the
allocation of GPSA funds to departmental and non-departmental graduate and professional student
organizations.
Grants:
The GPSA Grants committee provides funding for individual research, travel, and professional
development. There are three (3) grants cycles (Summer, Fall, & Spring) in which the Grants
committee must recruit and train readers, educate applicants and accept applications, score and rank
applications, and distribute awards. Occasionally appeals must be heard from applicants and re-reads
granted to provide a fair and effective grants process.
Lobby:
The Lobby Committee gets involved in regional politics by addressing GPSA concerns in the New
Mexico State Legislature. Not only do lobby committee members gain experience in running an
active lobbying process, but the work of the committee can truly benefit the graduate and
professional student community at UNM. Past lobby efforts have included a petition for lowincome child care assistance for graduate/professional students, the allocation of $100,000 for
graduate student research, now administered as the Graduate Research Development (GRD) Grant,
and a tax credit for New Mexico companies hiring New Mexico Graduate students.
Programs:
The Programs Committee implements social and academic events that serve to facilitate interaction
between graduate and professional students at the University of New Mexico, as well as coordinate
events that will connect the University and local community.
Student Support & Advocacy:
Do you know what your campus and community resources are? Do you know your rights as a
graduate and professional student? The GPSA Student Support and Advocacy Committee (SS+AC)
may be able to help! The committee maintains an updated list of resources that can be accessed in
the GPSA Office (SUB 1021), and arranges events for the education and support of graduates
student on campus. Committee members are also asked to be available during office hours for
student support questions.
Ad Hoc Committees:
Assistantships, Benefits, & Funding:
This committee is charged with advocating for increased GA / TA / PA / RA positions on campus,
working with collective bargaining groups, and identifying compensation and insurance issues on
behalf of graduate students.
Information Technology:
The IT Committee is in charge of maintaining computing services in the GPSA office, but most
importantly is in charge of the student computer lab, office computers, and the GPSA website. The
GPSA computer lab plays an important role in maintaining a solid connection between GPSA and
graduate/professional students, and provides free printing and general computing services to
graduate/professional students from all fields of study. The IT Committee ensures that the GPSA
website is up to date so that it can provide the most recent and important information to
graduate/professional students.
Media & Transparency:
This committee is charged with publicizing ongoing GPSA events and programming. This
committee should be comprised of creative people knowledgeable about social media (facebook,
Twitter, website design a plus), and strong communication skills.
Tuition & Fees:
The Tuition and Fees Committee is responsible for being apprised of potential hikes in student
tuition and fees, disseminating this information to students, and organizing collective actions and /
or other advocacy actions in support of students.
Equity & Outreach Committee:
This committee’s work is to conduct outreach with students from underrepresented groups at UNM
and academia at large and help integrate them into campus life via student groups, university
committee appointments, as well as into the programming of partner institutions such as the
