GPSA is now looking for GPSA Executive Committee Chairs for 2013-2014! These include: Elections Executive Finance Grants (x2) Lobby Programs Student Support & Advocacy (SS+A) Information Technology (IT) Assistantships, Benefits, & Funding Media & Transparency Tuition & Fees Each Executive Committee chair is responsible for: ● Reading & Abiding by the GPSA Constitution & Bylaws ● Holding regular committee meetings ● Posting agendas & minutes in accordance with proper public notice ● Appointing committee members (min 4 + chair) ● And submitting reports to the GPSA President ● As well as individual committee responsibilities (see below) ● Holding 1-2 GPSA office hours per week to address concerns of constituents If you are interested in the applying for a GPSA Executive Committee Chair, please submit the attached application as well as a current resume to [email protected]. Standing Committees: Elections: The GPSA Elections Committee organizes, supervises, and announces the results of the annual GPSA Election. The General Election for the GPSA President are held each April through an electronic ballot process. At this time, amendments to the GPSA Constitution, as accepted by Council, must also go before the graduate and professional student body for a vote. Finance: The Finance Committee organizes the annual GPSA budget, then works with the GPSA President and officers to keep a balanced budget. The committee also makes recommendations to the Legislative Finance Committee regarding appropriations requests as well as, supervising the allocation of GPSA funds to departmental and non-departmental graduate and professional student organizations. Grants: The GPSA Grants committee provides funding for individual research, travel, and professional development. There are three (3) grants cycles (Summer, Fall, & Spring) in which the Grants committee must recruit and train readers, educate applicants and accept applications, score and rank applications, and distribute awards. Occasionally appeals must be heard from applicants and re-reads granted to provide a fair and effective grants process. Lobby: The Lobby Committee gets involved in regional politics by addressing GPSA concerns in the New Mexico State Legislature. Not only do lobby committee members gain experience in running an active lobbying process, but the work of the committee can truly benefit the graduate and professional student community at UNM. Past lobby efforts have included a petition for lowincome child care assistance for graduate/professional students, the allocation of $100,000 for graduate student research, now administered as the Graduate Research Development (GRD) Grant, and a tax credit for New Mexico companies hiring New Mexico Graduate students. Programs: The Programs Committee implements social and academic events that serve to facilitate interaction between graduate and professional students at the University of New Mexico, as well as coordinate events that will connect the University and local community. Student Support & Advocacy: Do you know what your campus and community resources are? Do you know your rights as a graduate and professional student? The GPSA Student Support and Advocacy Committee (SS+AC) may be able to help! The committee maintains an updated list of resources that can be accessed in the GPSA Office (SUB 1021), and arranges events for the education and support of graduates student on campus. Committee members are also asked to be available during office hours for student support questions. Ad Hoc Committees: Assistantships, Benefits, & Funding: This committee is charged with advocating for increased GA / TA / PA / RA positions on campus, working with collective bargaining groups, and identifying compensation and insurance issues on behalf of graduate students. Information Technology: The IT Committee is in charge of maintaining computing services in the GPSA office, but most importantly is in charge of the student computer lab, office computers, and the GPSA website. The GPSA computer lab plays an important role in maintaining a solid connection between GPSA and graduate/professional students, and provides free printing and general computing services to graduate/professional students from all fields of study. The IT Committee ensures that the GPSA website is up to date so that it can provide the most recent and important information to graduate/professional students. Media & Transparency: This committee is charged with publicizing ongoing GPSA events and programming. This committee should be comprised of creative people knowledgeable about social media (facebook, Twitter, website design a plus), and strong communication skills. Tuition & Fees: The Tuition and Fees Committee is responsible for being apprised of potential hikes in student tuition and fees, disseminating this information to students, and organizing collective actions and / or other advocacy actions in support of students. Equity & Outreach Committee: This committee’s work is to conduct outreach with students from underrepresented groups at UNM and academia at large and help integrate them into campus life via student groups, university committee appointments, as well as into the programming of partner institutions such as the Graduate Resource Center, Graduate Student Funding Initiative, Office of Graduate Studies, the diversity recruitment / retention initiative Project for New Mexico Graduates of Color, and The Global Education Office (GEO).
