JOB PURPOSE:
To reduce CO2 emissions by encouraging volunteering and the development of sustainable
behaviours across the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and wider community.
About the Role:
The Carbon Reduction Coordinator will be responsible for the Engage, Embed and Empower
(E3) project which is funded by the Climate Challenge Fund. The project is centred on
Sustainability Hubs in the Ayr and Paisley Campuses of the UWS. These hubs will be focal
points for increased carbon literacy, action on climate change and supporting our circular
economy through the free tool hire service and free shops. They will also offer repair and
upcycling workshops which are aimed at upskilling our community, empowering them to keep
goods in use for as long as possible. The ultimate goal of all of our projects is to ensure the
continued reduction of CO2 emissions within our community.
Sustainability Hub
The candidate will work in the SAUWS Environment Team to establish a new Sustainability
hub in Ayr, whilst supporting the existing volunteer operated hub in Paisley. By establishing a
strong volunteer base, the hubs will be volunteer supported and will continue to ensure
carbon emission reductions beyond the end of the project.
One of the primary focuses of the hubs is as a resource swap shop, which reduces waste to
landfill and provides social benefits to students through the provision of free resources and
workshops. The hubs will also be used to provide energy advice clinics, travel clinics and
workshops. The hubs will also be centres of activity for wider community outreach with
Migrant Help and Alzheimer Scotland.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AREAS:
Developing Sustainable behaviours across the UWS Community
 Recruit, coordinate and motivate staff and students to be members of the sustainability
hubs on campus.
 Meet with Stakeholders around the University (Staff, Students & UWS) to encourage
their early involvement in projects which will reduce CO2 emissions
 Develop workshops which specifically target work with both students and service users
of Alzheimer Scotland and Migrant Help.
 Work closely with teaching staff, students, employability, halls of residence,
community groups and SAUWS staff to identify motivational factors which encourage
the adoption of carbon reduction practices.
 Working with other agencies ,provide advice on active travel and organise bike
maintenance and peer-learning workshops
 Develop and deliver campaign strategies, using a mix of social media, events, road
shows and other media which effective engages with your audience.
Encouraging Volunteering
 Organise a range of events designed to promote volunteering opportunities
 Grow the number of volunteering opportunities available to students at UWS
 Assist with the development of the Association’s environmental policies
 Recruitment and induct of environmental volunteers, ensuring their accreditation as
part of the HEAR awards.
General
 Support team work to deliver, monitor and establish full project evaluation
 Put in place robust monitoring and evaluation procedures for both projects, feeding
into wider SAUWS carbon reduction reports.
 Communicate the union’s environmental activities to our membership, sabbatical
officers and the wider UWS community
 Ensure that all audits are delivered, all records and databases are kept up to date and
that evidence based reports are submitted when required.
