Tenants Union of Victoria Board of Directors Position The Organisation Tenants Union of Victoria Annual Budget: $2,458,000 (2016/17) Number of Staff: 23 Board meets: monthly on a Monday evening in Fitzroy www.tuv.org.au Tenants Union of Victoria aims to inform and educate tenants about their rights, improve conditions for tenants, improve the status of tenants and represent the collective interests of tenants in law and policy making. We provide advice, assistance and advocacy for tenants of private and public residential properties, and residents of rooming houses and caravan parks in Victoria, Australia. The Tenants Union of Victoria is seeking a Board member with considerable experience on company or community boards. Candidates should have a passion for ensuring affordable housing and fair rents for public and private tenants in Victoria. Service on TUV’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties. The TUV Board provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance to the staff, consisting primarily of lawyers providing tenancy advice and support. Duties 1. Understand and demonstrate a commitment to the organisation’s mission and programs 2. Keep up to date with issues and trends that affect the organisation 3. Prepare for meetings by reading agendas, minutes, reports and other documentation required to actively participate 4. Contribute skills and knowledge by participating actively in meetings and committee work 5. Approving TUV’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions 6. Being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities 7. Partnering with the CEO and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out 8. Work co-operatively with the Chair, CEO and other Board members to set and review TUV’s strategic direction 9. Avoid any potential conflicts of interest 10. Understand and maintain confidentiality 11. Ensure the organisation is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements. Experience Required This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the TUV’s mission and who has a track record of board membership. The selected Board Member will have achieved leadership in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. The person we are seeking will have significant Board and and/or Chairperson experience. An expertise in strategy, business development, marketing and communications, legal and government operations are desirable. Key Selection Criteria 1. Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector 2. Commitment to and understanding of TUV’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience 3. Significant Board and / or Chair experience 4. Understanding of not for profit governance 5. Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and mentor 6. Exemplary stakeholder engagement skills particularly with business and philanthropic communities 7. Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence and inspire others 8. A genuine commitment to social change for tenants in Victoria 9. Knowledge and experience of fundraising in the NFP sector (preferred) 10. Knowledge of government operations (preferred) 11.
