3rd Grade Social Studies
Learning About Scandinavian Countries
In December, the 3rd grade classrooms learned about Scandinavian holiday traditions when Ron & Doris
Anderson, and Tim & Faye Berndt spent the morning with our students. They shared their knowledge of
Scandinavian countries and taught the students how to make kringle as well as demonstrated how to
make lefse. Students were able to make their own kringle and decorate sugar cookies. Each student took
home a box filled with samples of kringle, lefse, decorated cookies, almond bark pretzels, and a candy
cane. Students were encouraged to share what they had learned with their families.
Dacotah Prairie Museum
Ms. Rawstern from the Dacotah Prairie Museum has been volunteering once a month in the 3rd grade
classrooms. Activities presented include topics such as the history of Aberdeen, Native Americans, and
pioneers. These activities have incorporated many of our social studies standards. Students have enjoyed
sharing what they have learned with their families. This year-long learning adventure will culminate with a
field trip to the museum!
January’s lesson:
How pioneers used dip
pens and quills to write
important documents.
