Year 8 and 9 Food and Nutrition Dear Parents/Guardians 2nd February 2015 Firstly, a huge apology that you are only receiving this letter today; I unexpectedly had to be away from school and did not have a chance to get this letter to you last week. Secondly, I would like to continue with what I had planned tomorrow but if you cannot provide any of the suggested ingredients, then please do not make a special shopping trip; just email me and I will ensure that your child will have the necessary ingredients to learn the appropriate skills in the lesson tomorrow. I am also aware that some students had to miss last week’s pastry lesson due to a match. The purpose of the next 2 lessons is to practise making pastry and learn how to roll it out, make a lid for a pie and how to line a pie dish. I will also be introducing the properties of eggs in baking. Tomorrow 3rd February I will be offering the students the chance to make a pie but those students who missed last week’s lesson may like to start with the jam tart option from last week instead. On 10th February I would like all students to make the quiche. On the back of this letter is the recipe for the pastry and the suggested recipes for the pie (either sweet or savoury) and quiche. You are welcome to use a family favourite instead or a recipe researched by your child as long as it meets the following criteria:- No raw meat or fish - Is able to oven cook in 35 – 40 minutes Please remember to send in an appropriately sized pie dish/flan dish if you are using your own recipe. My recipes require a 9” pie dish with a lip for tomorrow and an 8-9” flan case for the quiche. Yours sincerely Mrs S Chamberlain-Keen Teacher of Food and Nutrition [email protected]
