Nutrition

• A balanced diet will have foods from
all of the seven food groups.
Carbohydrates
Proteins
• Your body cells are
mostly made of
protein.
• Proteins are made up
of lots of amino acids.
• We need protein to
repair and replace
damaged cells or to
make new cells during
growth.
Fats
• Fats are made from
fatty acids and
glycerol.
• We need fats for a
store of energy, which
you use if your body
runs out of
carbohydrates.
• We also need fats to
make cell membranes
and for warmth.
Vitamins
• We only need these in
small amounts.
• They are essential for
good health.
• They keep many vital
processes happening.
• Deficiency diseases
are caused by a lack of
vitamins
Minerals
Calcium for your teeth
and bones
Sodium for your nerves
Iron for your blood
Fibre
• Fibre comes from
plants
• Fibre is not actually
digested, it just keeps
food moving smoothly
through your system.
• Fibre gives your
digestive system an
internal work out
keeping it fit, healthy
and working.
Water
Water is important
• Our blood plasma is
mainly water
• Water is in sweat that
cools us down
• Chemical reactions in
our cells take place in
water
• Waste products
removed in water
