ENVIRONMENTAL & OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY Mrs. Boyd OSH 320 CLASS OBJECTIVES • Understand causes of drinking and wastewater pollution and discuss waste treatment facilities • Discuss air pollution and controls strategies • Basic knowledge of solid and hazardous waste and applicable disposal methods • Working knowledge state and federal legislation • Develop a better understanding of resources available for EHS professionals • Discuss sustainability and how it relates to industry COURSE OUTLINE • Overview of environmental science • Environmental regulatory overview • ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) • Sustainability and corporate social responsibility EVALUATION AND GRADING PROCEDURES • Group Project (100 pts) • 3 Exams~300 pts • Other Assignments (quizzes and optional paper)~25-100 pts *A calculator will be needed during exams COURSE EXPECTATIONS • Unexcused absence from an exam will result in a “0” • Absence from an exam must be for emergency situations at the instructor’s discretion made within 24 hours prior to exam’s original time • Late arrival for an exam will result in a 10% deduction COURSE EXPECTATIONS • Attendance will be taken at the beginning of the classtardiness is considered an absence • No cell phone use (must be up, on mute) • Bathroom use during exams is not permitted • Zero tolerance on tobacco ATTENDANCE POLICY • Students are expected to adhere to the MSU Attendance Policy • Attend class regularly • Absences will only be excused for personal illness, death in immediate family, student participation in a University Sanctioned Event or other circumstances at the instructor’s discretion • Excessive unexcused absences will affect a student’s grade in the course • Beyond two absences, 5 points will be deducted from an exercise grade per absence ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY • Cheating, Fabrication and Falsification and Plagiarism • No cell phone use at all during exams, automatic failure will result • If disciplinary action results in awarding an grade of “E” in the course, students may not drop the course • Students will result in a zero if any of the above violations occur STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY • Visit the office for Student Disability Services immediately if special assistance is needed with accommodations • Located in Wells Hall CHAPTER 1: OBJECTIVES • Study evidence about crisis on Earth • Learn about the 3 factors behind the “Crisis” • Distinguish between the different viewpoints • Learn about key figures that influenced history • Look into the diversity of the existing environmental laws • Renewable and non re-neweable resources • Differentiate among 4 different approaches to resource use LATEST EVIDENCE: GLOBAL WARMING • 2015 was the warmest year on record • July was the hottest month overall on record • Only two months did not make the record highs: Jan. & April • El Nino & human warming may be to blame?
