This course addresses the "Whys?" of politics and includes case studies from current events and
contemporary political history. Much attention is on the application of various psychological
models to interpret individual and collective political behaviors. Students compare and contrast
patterns in different political cultures. Specific focus is on psychobiography, psychodynamics of
leadership, and psychology of the group/crowd.

Students familiarize themselves with diverse methodologies which integrate psychological and
political fields. Reading assignments expound upon mentality (including that of the subversive and
the political extremist), motivation, and violent practices. Much emphasis is placed on the political
elites and their relationships to the led, specifically as outlined by the famous cliché: “When the
people lead, the leaders will follow."
:‫מהלך השיעורים‬
Students are introduced to psychological methods systematically applied to the study of attitudes,
political events, and personalities. The methodology of political psychology probes such essential
influences in the decision-making process as childhood, creativity, family dynamics, group fantasy,
psychic trauma, emotions, and the differences between conscious and unconscious intention.
Examined are controversial primary sources, including diaries, autobiographies, and memoirs. One
of the goals of this course is to provide students with intellectual tools and methods of applying
psychological research to political phenomena and policy-making.
