Swim Charleston Meet Information and Meet Goals

Swim Charleston State Meet Information
There are 500 swimmers in each prelim session so both parents and
swimmers should get there early and save enough seats for our parents to
sit together. Show your team spirit and wear our team colors and tees too!
Meet Goals: This is our first state meet and we would like very much for
Swim Charleston to be noticed for 3 things: 1) fast swimming, 2)
exceptional sportsmanship – ideally handshakes in the water but
afterwards is also fine, 3) THANKING the timers and officials. In addition,
we would like swimmers to focus on:
1. Fast tight streamlines and good starts
2. Swimming on the black line (NO circle swimming)
3. Good turns and no breathing off the fly and free turns
4. Excellent finishes
5. Learning something from every race – we want swimmers to reflect
on their experience and LEARN from it
Parking Information: On Thursday and Friday, families will NOT be able to drive
into the parking lot adjacent to the pool to drop off swimmers close to the awning
entrance at the side of the building. USC is in session and the administration has
insisted that this parking area must be left clear for USC students. Any
unauthorized vehicles parking in any reserved space will be towed. There is a
parking map available at the meet tab on our website. You may park for free at
Bates House Dormitory located on Whaley Street, a short walk over the skywalk
to the Blatt Center.
Timers: We have been asked to provide timers/officials if possible. Parents
timing or counting for their swimmer will need to report to the volunteer check-in
table to gain access to the pool deck.

Warm-up and Warm-down: Swimmers in the diving well must be swimming
laps. No stopping to chat with friends. Swimmers not doing laps will be asked to
leave the diving well.
Seating Information: Swimmers must sit together on deck – we want swimmers
to be in the shade as much as possible. There will be designated team areas.
Of course, swimmers can visit their parents in the stands as needed. To reduce
congestion on deck, USC has added bleachers to the deck for
swimmers. Swimmers may still bring chairs on deck, but they cannot leave the
chair on the deck. Chairs must be removed at the end of each session.
Chase starts: There will be chase starts for the prelim sessions on Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday. The odd numbered heats will begin at the scoreboard
end, and the even numbered heats will begin at the opposite end. Please note:
– All 50s will start from the scoreboard end.
– There will be NO chase starts Thursday.
– There will be NO chase starts for relays.
Relays: The 11-12 relays are positive check-in and will be seeded the day of the
meet. The top heat of positively checked in relays will compete in Finals.
Finals: We have swimmers definitely swimming in the finals on Saturday
(McKenzie 400 free and probably the 11-12 girls Medley relay) and Sunday
(Cheney 200 fly) and a very very good chance of swimmers on Friday night as
well. Please consider coming to watch and support our swimmers. I will do my
best to notify everyone via email of all of our finals’ swimmers and the events in
which they have made finals. Of course, this information will also be available on
meet mobile.
Nutrition/Rest: Swimmers should have snacks with good protein/carb combos
and lots of water for the meet! Honey and nuts and berries are great options.
Chocolate milk is a great recovery drink after the morning session if swimmers
have at least a 2 hour break between consuming the milk and swimming again.
Swimmers who are competing in finals should nap and/or rest between sessions
and, if possible, this should be in an air-conditioned environment. Finally,
swimmers should get their legs up at 90 degrees for 5 minutes after warm down
after each race and again before bed every night at the meet.
My cell – please text any questions you have during the meet weekend to me as
that will be the fastest way to reach me 704-796-1192. Coach Doug can be
