Optimal performance for Thu Duc III Water Plant SINAMICS PERFECT HARMONY GH180 & SIMOTICS HV Series H-compact PLUS siemens.com/drives Project Saigon Clean Water Business and Investment Joint Stock Company (SWIC) aimed to increase its water supply to about 600,000 households of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. Even though it appears that the country has abundant surface and ground water resources, it has been experiencing water shortages. The factors vary from uneven distribution of rainfall, pollution, poor service quality, to lack of physical infrastructure and financial capacity to ensure water supply. The government has been tackling these water resources management issues by implementing policies and programs with regard to this. Therefore the plant has been progressively modified over the years with its capacity being gradually increased. Challenge The Thu Duc III Water Plant, located in Linh Trung Ward in Thu Duc District, was inaugurated with the aim of increasing its clean water supply to 600,000 local households. This is equivalent to a supply requirement capacity of 300,000 m³ a day. The challenge was to pump several tons of river water from the Dong Nai River to the Thu Duc Water Plant and pump it out as high quality purified water to the regions’ inhabitants. This new facility required a reliable and powerful drive train that will maneuver the water in and out of the facility with less downtime, since the city is highly dependent from its water supply. In addition, it required a flexible drives system that will adjust based on every households’ supply requirements. There are different fluctuations of water requirement in every situation depending on each household. Due to its intricate requirements, SWIC needed an integrated drive train with advanced technologies, which are safe, cost and energy efficient as well as reliable. A quick return of investment, availability of spare parts, local service and support was equally important. Benefits • Energy savings • Reduction of downtime • Quick investment amortization • Availability of service Siemens’ IDS for optimal performance Solution Siemens Vietnam together with Passavant Energy & Environment GmbH (PE&E) offered Siemens’ Integrated Drive System (IDS) to SWIC’s Thu Duc III Water Plant. This was their first project collaboration in Vietnam. PE&E was responsible for engineering, procurement and construction and Siemens supplied the drive products and systems. Siemens’ IDS was selected because it fully met all technical requirements and offered a profile of technical competence, experience, high quality products and great service. The project was carried out with PE&E’s patented Turbo-LME technology and Siemens’ IDS according to SWIC’s specifications. Six drive systems, including six SINAMICS PERFECT HARMONY GH180 MV converters and six SIMOTICS HV Series H-compact PLUS motors were delivered to pump the patented Turbo-LME process. The motors are powerfully engineered with highest grade materials and technology to ensure long-term and reliable operation. For example, the motor frame is made of grey cast-iron for stability and good vibration resistance. The SIMOT- ICS HV Series H-compact PLUS motors are controlled by SINAMICS PERFECT HARMONY GH180 MV converters to run with variable speed in order to compensate the changing load. The SINAMICS drives offer the required reliability in form of cell bypass function. This allows the automatic isolation of a defective area and keeps the drives running in case of a power cell failure. Siemens’ IDS is an intelligent system as its speed and torque adjust to different working conditions when water demand changes. Siemens guaranteed that the drives are connected directly and the engineers worked closely to ensure everything was fitted. Staff training for operations and monitoring the system was regularly conducted during the project. Siemens’ expert team from Vietnam and Singapore provided great support and guidance on how to set the parameters and operation of the variable frequency drives. In this way it is now possible to achieve optimal performance of the water treatment plant. A performance test proves this: even when the plant is run at its full capacity, the IDS still uses a little less energy than initially calculated. The operation proves to be smooth without any damage or problems – the drives were started from zero to a maximum of 17,000 m³/h even though the established maximum accounts for only 14,000 m³/h. The motors installed have 96.4 % efficiency while control has 96 % – compared to competitive products efficiency levels are 2-3 % better. Summary PE&E, Siemens and SWIC have perfected a unique water-treatment system, assuring the residents of Ho Chi Minh City that every single water drop is safe to use and crystal clear. Where water pressure was weak and no clean water was supplied before, there is now a sufficient supply of clean high purity drinking water. Siemens’ IDS majorly contributed to this development by ensuring optimal performance of the water treatment facility. For a job as tough as achieving the optimal circulation of such a vast flow of water, there is no substitute for high-performance power delivery. The long-term benefits of the IDS even enabled energy savings for the customer. Siemens Ltd.
