The Chair Plant Biotechnology at Freiburg University (Germany) invites
applications for a
Ph.D. student position
Plant Molecular Biology
Biological functions of conserved plant
microRNAs
Within a trinational research project funded by the German National Research Foundation
(DFG) the function of highly conserved microRNAs (miRNA) will be analyzed in the seed
plants Arabidopsis thaliana, tomato, and the moss Physcomitrella patens. This project is
carried out in cooperation with an Israeli and Palestinian partner.
MiRNAs are small, non-coding RNAs which bind to their cognate target RNAs based on
sequence complementarity thereby either mediating specific cleavage or translational
inhibition of the target. MiRNAs were characterised to be major regulatory components
controlling gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. Within the project the role of a
specific miRNA that is highly conserved in different plant lineages in the control of plant
development will studied.
We are looking for a Ph.D. student interested in plant molecular biology, regulatory networks
controlling gene expression and plant development.
The position is initially limited to a period of two years with the possibility of extension. The
University of Freiburg is committed to increase the quota of women and we encourage
women to submit their applications. The physically disabled will be preferred if equally
qualified.
