This half term we will be working on the following areas
Identify where the Northern Lights can be seen
(cross curricula)
in Maths:
Measures & data, length, weight, bar charts, fractions,
Identify the location, countries of Northern Lights
(North & South Pole, Sweden, Norway, Canada,
Russia, Greenland & Antarctica)
Time zones across the world and how to
calculate the time in different countries
Our Christian Value this half term is Thankfulness,
decimals and percentages. We will cover some addition
History of the lightbulb
What history has told us about the Northern
Lights and the legends/fables linked to this
natural phenomenon.
something we can all work hard to show not only to
God but to the people who love and care for us.
Year 6 will lead an act of worship this half term.
Computing
Research websites and create information texts
using electronic devices on Microsoft Publisher
Create PowerPoint with sound and animations using
research collected.
Photography
Create pinhole cameras and experiment with shapes
and light by covering the camera lense with
different shapes
ART & DT
Everyone will make a Shadow puppet show for a
performance.
Northern Lights art (Aurora Borealis, Dance of
Spirits) and the Southern Lights
Mathematics
Science
Light & Shadows is the scientific focus this
half term and Vision- how do the eyes work?
We will look at Natural darkness, light and
colours, reflective light and materials, mirrors
and shadows
Weather permitting we will have a go at
creating a human sundial  and Year 5 and 6
will carry out some ‘Crime Labs’ investigations
linked with light sources.

Life Education Bus on Monday 13th March.
and subtraction with money (Yr.3&4), shape, time,
position and direction and Year 6 will work on ratio and
algebra.
Literacy and Books
This half term we will be working with three different
genres. The first of which is focused on the storybook
Flotsam, a picture book with a difference. This unit will
challenge pupil’s perception of picture books and
hopefully create lots of opportunities to write!
The second unit of literacy will include poetry linked
with the topic for this term.
The final literacy unit will have the children working
with information texts and turning their creative hand
to some non-fiction writing.
In class we have a number of books linked to the topic
this term focusing around light and shadows, however if
you have any at home you think we might enjoy please
send them in.
PSHE
There are lots of things to celebrate in this term;
Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and the beginning of
Lent. There is also Mothering Sunday and the chocolate
filled Easter celebration which we will be
talking about in class and looking how this is
celebrated by others outside of our own community.
