Figure in Warm and Cool Light By completing this painting you will gain experience with painting the effects of warm and cool light on the body. With a full, open palette follow the procedures of the direct painting process that we have been practicing since the beginning of the semester. Light your subject with cool light on one side and warm light on the other. An easy way to achieve this is to position your subject next to a window away from direct sunlight and to place a lamp with an incandescent or halogen light on the opposite side. You can paint a self portrait, or a family member or friend, but you must work directly from the subject and not from a photograph. Paint more than the head and shoulders; include at least half the figure from the waist up to the head. It is okay to compose part of the figure without the head, but more than half of the body must be represented. If you paint a self portrait and you cannot see more than your head and shoulders in the mirror then include the objects and surrounding space in your composition. Be creative. Make this interesting.
