Dean of Postgraduate Research Vice-Chancellor’s Office Extension: 7285 Email: [email protected] Summer Research Scholarship Scheme 2015-2016 Project Application Form Please complete and submit the application form as a WORD document and send to [email protected] The Project Title of Project (max 30 words): Testing the right riparian plant species for stream restoration projects: the role of leaf breakdown Project Leader(s): Prof Jon Harding Dr Helen Warburton Host Department/Organization: School of Biological Sciences Other persons involved in this topic/activity: (List other significant members involved along with their affiliation to the research project.) Name Affiliation to project Dr Kristy Hogsden Investigator Prof Angus McIntosh PI Brief outline of project Describe the proposed research project – maximum of 400 words (box will expand as you type). Note that this information will be published on the web in order to attract student applicants and therefore be mindful of any Intellectual Property issues We are currently involved in a 10yr research project to determine tools to assist with stream remediation (CAREX program http://www.biol.canterbury.ac.nz/ferg/carex.shtml). One aspect of this study is determining the best plant species to grow along riparian margins of streams to provide useful functions to help restore stream health. Leaves and twigs are important sources of food for stream invertebrates; however little research has 1 been done on how quickly leaves from different species decompose in streams and which are good food and which are not. The summer student will conduct field and laboratory experiments on leaf breakdown and feeding preferences of aquatic invertebrates. If the project involves work away from the University campus (e.g., at fieldwork sites) please detail all locations. Field work will involve day trips to streams around Canterbury If the student be required to work outside of normal university hours (8am-5pm) please provide details Some experiments may require 2-3 hours outside 8-5. These will be negotiated with the student. Benefits student will gain from involvement in the project Describe the research experience and skills that the student will acquire through involvement in this research project – maximum of 100 words. The student will be introduced to aspects of stream ecology and stream restoration. They will gain experience in being involved in a large research project and working in a research team. They will be involved in all aspects of experimental design, and conducting field and laboratory experiments. Specific student requirements Please provide details of all requirements you have for the student to work on this project – for example, if specific courses/experience are necessary. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and mature student who is comfortable working in the field, in streams and laboratory. A valid drivers license would be an advantage. 2
