Reflecting Light off a Plane Mirror (Ch. 11.1&11.2)
Goals: -to describe how visible light is reflected in plane mirrors
-to describe the difference between diffuse and specular reflection
-to explain the relationship between the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection
Mirrors
A mirror is anything that
Some word to know:
Plane mirrors: regular, flat mirrors

(e.x. your bathroom mirror is probably a plane mirror)
Normal: line drawn perpendicular to the reflective surface
Incident ray: ray of light travelling from source to the reflective surface
Reflected ray: ray of light that bounces off the reflected surface
Angle of incidence: angle between the incident ray and the normal
Angle of reflection: angle between the reflected ray and the normal
CHALLENGE: Label the diagram below with the appropriate terms.

Reflecting Light off Surfaces
-
When light hits a smooth surface it is____________________________________ to predict where
light will be reflected.
When light hits a rough surface it is _____________________________________to predict where light
will be reflected.
Specular reflection: the reflection of light off a ___________________________ surface

Diffuse reflection:
