324.245 Parties of Italy
The Italian translators requested the introduction of a special development for the
political parties of Italy similar to those introduced in the last few years for Austria,
Germany, and Switzerland. The team, including Federica Paradisi, prepared the initial
developments, which included both the identification of important parties and the
placement of each party in the basic development at 324.24-324.29. After the initial
review by the editors, the Italian team provided another version, of which this exhibit is
the English translation.
Italian Liberal Party
In a follow-up discussion, we explored the placement of the Italian Liberal Party (Partito
liberale italiano). Italian Liberal Party is the name of a party that existed between 1943
and 1994 and is also the name of a party that came into existence in 2004. The Italian
draft of April 4 indicated that the two parties should be considered to be conservative
parties, not liberal parties. We questioned the placement because both parties seem to be
associated with the Internazionale Liberale, even though some of the statements by both
parties reflected conservative liberalism. Conservative liberalism is a type of liberalism,
not conservatism. Thus, we wondered if the parties should be classed with liberal parties
(324.24506), not conservative parties (324.24504).

The Italian team sent the following reply:
Although both the ‘Partito liberale italiano (1943-1994)’ and ‘Partito liberale
italiano (2004- )’ are inspired by the ‘Internazionale liberale’ values, they are not
to be considered as “liberal parties” but rather “conservative” ones, according to
the Italian tradition. Furthermore, the expression “liberal parties” has always been
understood as synonym of “progressive parties” (in Italian “partiti progressisti”)
in the Italian translation of the DDC, also considering the examples mentioned in
the English entries built by the notation “06” from the addition table under
324.24-324.29.
On the basis of this reply, we kept the two parties at 324.24504 Conservative parties.
Because Liberal is part of the name of each party, a see-also reference at 324.24506
Liberal parties leads the classifier to 324.24504 for these two parties.
Class-elsewhere note at 03-07 in the 324.24–.29 add table
In Exhibit 129-17.1, the add table entry at 03-07 is:

We should have also reviewed the class-elsewhere note. Editorial Rule 9.17.3 states that
if an example is need for clarification of the instruction, a scatter class-elsewhere note is
used instead of a direct class-else note. Thus, the second portion of the first classelsewhere note, i.e., that portion with the examples, should be converted to a scatter
class-elsewhere note.
Editorial Rule 9.18.3.4 states that a class-elsewhere note is not used to refer to a subject
that is merely related. The first portion that class-elsewhere note refers to related parties
and should be deleted.

Proposed expansion
The basic structure of the expansion already exists via the add instruction at 324.24-.29.
The parts of the expansion that are new are the addition of notes relating to specific
parties in existing entries and the addition of new entries for specific parties, following
the provisions for specific kinds of parties. Underscoring is not used to indicate changes.
