In many ways, America is the land of plenty.
However, for 1 in 6 people in the United States, hunger is
a reality. Many people believe that the problems
associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of
society, certain areas of the country, or certain
neighborhoods, but the reality is much different.
Right now, millions of
Americans are struggling
with hunger. These are
often hard-working adults,
children and seniors who
simply cannot make ends
meet and are forced to go
without food for several
meals, or even days.
Americans waste over 34 million tons of food a year.
Our around 27 million tons of edible food yearly and the
national school lunch program waste about 12% of the
food they serve. Of this food waste, only about 3% thus
far have been rescued and recycled. Our goal is to expand
our program and rescue as much of this food as we can to
feed our hungry citizens. convenience stores, restaurants
and supermarkets waste
Businesses that participate will
receive tax benefits for their
donations and freedom from
liability lawsuits thanks to the Bill
Emerson Good Samaritan Food Act
and the good feeling that comes
with helping others.
Food rescued from local restaurants, stores and cafeterias
will be used to make nutritious meals that will be
distributed to our non-for profit social service
organizations that help those in need.
So far in 2012
we have rescued
over 15,000
pounds of food.
Little Caesars, Pizza Hut,
Papa Johns and Bob Evans
are a few of our partners
that are helping us fight hunger.
Our staff will deliver the prepared meals to our
non-profit social services organizations. Some
organizations here in Morgan County we currently
partner with include MANNA MISSION, WELL SPRINGS,
HAVEN YOUTH CENTER AND DESERT ROSE. We have also
helped those in need in surrounding communities, such
as I.D.T. (Indiana Dream Team) of Gosport and WHEELERS
MENS AND WOMENS MISSION of Indianapolis.
