rid off.
Shannan Goodrich,
executive director of
Crossway, advised not to

“Only paper will be

“Every penny goes to

Brenco will have a set

papers shredded.
“This is a wonderful
opportunity at the end

said. “It allows us to continue to do God’s work
here at Crossway and

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The
force won’t officially awaken until
December, but Star Wars fans got
an early glimpse Thursday with
the debut of a spooky new teaser
trailer for “Star Wars: The Force
Awakens.”
The clip features the wreckage
of a star destroyer, X-Wing battles,
the Millennium Falcon in action,
and a first look at Harrison Ford as
Han Solo.
“Chewie, we’re home,” Solo
says at the close of the brief teaser,
prompting the audience to scream
and applaud.
Die-hard fans packed the main
hall at the Anaheim Convention
Center for the event known as Star
Wars Celebration. They wore costumes and wielded light sabers as
they watched director J.J. Abrams
and producer and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy kick off
the four-day event.
Franchise cast newcomers
Oscar Isaac, Daisy Ridley and
John Boyega surprised the audience with appearances and regaled the rapt fans with anecdotes
about the highly anticipated film
set to hit theaters Dec. 18.
The fans were treated to a few
morsels of new information even
though the film remains cloaked
in secrecy.
Abrams, who is finishing the
edit of the film, spoke about his
love for the series and his insistence on keeping sets for the new
doing a fundraiser,
Goodrich said.
“We are very, very
grateful for him,” she
said, crediting Brenco
owner Eddie McDonald.
Goodrich said Crossway provides sustaining
alternatives to abortions
and educates parents to
be the best they can be.
They have free pregnancy tests and have baby
items and a clothes closet
to help parents.
Goodrich said
Crossway is in the process of purchasing an
ultrasound machine
and providing life skills
classes.
Crossway also will
have a basketball tournament fundraiser April
25 at Muldraugh Baptist
Church.
“It will be a 3-on-3
tournament,” Goodrich
said.
Registration is $15 per

“The thing that struck me ... is
how real you knew and felt Star
Wars was when you first saw ‘A
New Hope,’” he said. “You want it
to be legitimate. You want it to be
authentic. Building as much as we
could was really the mandate.”
He also revealed that the desert
landscape seen in both teasers was
the planet Jakku, not Tatooine as
seen in other episodes. Filming

It’s “a Western and a fairy tale

the new teaser, viewers see Rey

TULSA, Okla. — A
state lawmaker called
Thursday for an independent review of Tulsa’s
reserve deputy program
as more questions arose
about the training of a
73-year-old volunteer
officer who says he accidentally shot a suspect
to death while the man
was being held down by
others.
Some of those questions stemmed from a
statement reserve deputy
Robert Bates made about
his past law enforcement
experience and training
in a report about the
April 2 fatal shooting of
Eric Harris.
Bates claimed on the
form that he received
training from Arizona’s
Maricopa County
Sheriff’s Office on responding to active shooters. But Lisa Allen, a
spokeswoman for the office, told The Associated
Press on Thursday that
Bates’ name couldn’t be
found on a list of people
who are allowed to participate in such training.
“The active shooter
classes are only open to
qualified armed posse
people and he isn’t one
of them,” Allen said.
A message seeking
comment on the training
left with Bates’ attorney,
Clark Brewster, was not
immediately returned
late Thursday.
The Tulsa County
Sheriff’s Office said it
would conduct an internal investigation of
the shooting, but state
Rep. Mike Shelton fears
a growing mistrust of
police after a series of
high-profile killings by
law officers around the
country.
“There are too many
variables here for me and
anyone else to believe
that this investigation is
going to be impartial,”
Shelton, a Democrat
from Oklahoma City,
