Chemistry Elements Project

SNC1D - Importance of Elements Project
DUE DATE:
For this assignment, you will work as an individual or in groups of two (2). Your goal is to become an
expert on one of the elements from the periodic table and prepare a 3-D model of the atom. Your final
product will be in two parts: Data Collection Sheet, and a model. You must choose an element from the
first 20 elements.
IN YOUR RESEARCH, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
Where is the element found
How is the element extracted
Uses of this element
Controversies involving the element
Economic impacts
Political impacts
Any technological and/or social contributions of the element.
How life would be different without this element
STEP ONE: Choose a group size and partner(s) and choose an element that interests you. Sign up on the
sign-up sheet. No more than 2 groups can do the same element.
STEP TWO: Using the recommended websites, and websites you found on your own, fill out the Data
Collection Sheet.
STEP
THREE: Draw a Bohr-Rutherford Diagram for your element.
STEP FOUR: Create a 3-D model of your element.

3. IMPORTANCE OF YOUR ELEMENT: In this section, write down research notes and include your own
thoughts based on research to answer some of the following (attach extra pages if required):
Where it is found?
How it is extracted from nature?
Is this element biologically important for life? How?
What are human uses of this element?
How has this element contributed to new or old technologies?
Have their ever been any controversies or conflicts involving the element?
How does this element impact the economy?
How does or how has this element impacted local or global politics?
How would life be different without this element?
BOHR-RUTHERFORD DIAGRAM:
USE THIS SPACE TO DRAW A PROPER BOHR-RUTHERFORD FOR YOUR ELEMENT.
TIPS FOR YOUR MODEL:
It must stand alone
Choose materials that are sturdy but light enough to meet the above expectation
Build the Nucleus (it MUST have the correct number of protons and neutrons) using two
different coloured spheres (these sphere should be larger than the
electrons).
Electrons MUST be on rings (it should be the same as your BohrRutherford Diagram – pair your electrons) using a different (smaller)
coloured sphere.
You should have a label hanging or sitting on your model that has at
a minimum the following:
o legend for the colours of the subatomic particles
o Symbol & Name of element
o Atomic Mass
o Atomic Number
