The Human and Social Dynamics funding instrument supports basic
research in the Social Sciences and Humanities, and will support
new or existing research initiatives in the following thematic focus
areas:




Science, technology and society;
The dynamics of human and social behavior;
Social cohesion and identity; and
Societal change and the evolution of modern society
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
 Permanent and contract UCT researchers doing basic Social
Science or Humanities research in one of the four thematic
areas above;
 Contract employees may apply, but on condition that their
appointment is for (at least) the duration of the project
applied for in the submission. The length of the contract
should be stated in the application form. Salaries must be
paid by UCT and the primary employment of the individual
concerned must be at UCT. A contract researcher appointed
at a research institution on behalf of a third party to fulfil a
very specific function for the latter does not qualify for
support.
 Retired academics and/or researchers, provided that they
meet all set criteria as stipulated below:
o are resident in South Africa;
o are formally affiliated to UCT e.g. appointed as an
emeritus professor, honorary research
associate/professor, contract employee;
o are active researchers with a distinguished track record
in research and postgraduate student supervision;
o are actively mentoring/training postgraduate
students/young research staff and
o UCT ensures that a minimum of reasonable time (6
months minimum) is spent at the institution for the
purpose of research and research capacity
development.
FUNDING
Funding will be available for a maximum of three years (2018 to
2020). Successful applications will receive funding that
accommodates the following budget items:
 Grant holder-linked student support
 Staff development grants
 Research-related operating costs, including:
 Sabbaticals
 Materials and Supplies
 Travel and subsistence
 Research / Technical / Ad hoc Assistants
 Research Equipment
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications must be submitted through an online application
process, via http://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za , as follows:
 Register/Login using your ID number and password;
 Select ‘create new application’ from the list of existing calls;
 Select ‘Human and Social Dynamics Call 2018’;
 Ensure that your online CV is updated.
 Submit applications in accordance with the strategy and
eligibility criteria, as set out in the Call Framework document
for funding commencing in 2018; and
 Submit ONLY ONE application per principal investigator.
Additional applications will not be considered.
 Please submit your final application by no later than Friday,
30 June at 23h59. This is NRF system closing date and no
applications can be submitted after this point.
Completed applications will go to the UCT Research Support
Services for verification and, once endorsed, will be submitted to
the NRF.
