Young Toddler Lesson Plans MAY Week 4 UP THE WATERSPOUT EARLY EDUCATION DISCLAIMER: Please understand that these are my lessons as planned…however, when teaching toddlers, things are always subject to change. Teachable moments come when someone asks an unrelated question or an unexpected event occurs. Keeping things flexible helps keep the stress level down and allows for those teachable moments. Cognitive Domain - Early Literacy and Phonemic Awareness Activities Daily Music Time: Students will sing and rhyme to develop phonological awareness - an important pre-reading building block. The class will participate in singing, dancing, sign-language, movement, rhythm, and self-expression. Learning Standards: AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, L.1.1.5, L.1.6.2 Daily Circle Time (Big Red Barn): Using the “Big Red Barn”, the class will participate in an age-appropriate exploration of today‟s calendar, weather, shape, number, letter, etc… through exposure, manipulation, and discussion. Learning Standards: AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, MT 2.1, MT 2.3, MT 2.4, MT 2.5, MT 2.6, MT 2.7, MT 2.8, MT 2.9, SS 3.3a5 Monday Read Aloud Activity – The children will listen to The Red Ripe Strawberry and will be introduced to new vocabulary. The children will also sing “The Muffin Man” and learn/practice the finger-play “Purple Rhyme” Learning Standards: CA 9.1a, CA 9.1b, AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, and L.1.6 Tuesday Alphabet Activity – The children will be introduced to letter “F”. The letter “F” makes the /f/ sound like in “fruit”, “fuzzy”, and “farm”. The class will work on name recognition using the song “(name) is Here Today”. The children will also sing “The Muffin Man” along with other rhyming words along with reviewing the finger-play “Purple Rhyme” (BJU Press pg. 251) Learning Standards: AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, L.1.2, L 1.6 Wednesday Read Aloud Activity – The children will listen to Grapes and will be introduced to new vocabulary. The children will also sing “10 Little Grapes” (tune to 10 Little Indians) and learn/practice the finger-play “Little Jack Horner”. Learning Standards: CA 9.1a, CA 9.1b, AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, and L.1.6 Thursday Alphabet Activity – The children will review letter “F”. Learning Standards: CA 9.1a, CA 9.1b, AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, L.1.6 Cognitive Domain - Early Numeracy / Science and Social Studies Concepts Daily Music Time: Students will sing and dance to songs that include numbers and counting. Learning Standards: AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, L.1.1.5, L.1.6.2, MT 2.1, MT 2.8 Daily Rote Count: Children will count (by 1‟s) up to this month‟s number (1 – 10) Learning Standards: LM 2.1.1, AL.15.3, MT 2.1, and MT 2.8 Monday Math Activity – The children will practice their math skills by counting “Berries” pompoms. (1 – 10) Learning Standards: AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, L.1.1.5, L.1.6.2, MT 2.1, and MT 2.8 Tuesday Science / Social Studies Activity – The children will explore in/out by putting blue/red items in/out a container. They will also discuss which of the 5 senses they used throughout this activity. (sight, sound, and touch) Learning Standards: AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, L.1.1.5, L.1.6.2, SS 7.2, SS 7.3, SS 7.4, SS 8.1 Wednesday Math Activity – The children will use their math skills as they count and explore number (10) rhyme 1, 2 buckles my shoe (activity pg. A115), and reviewing shape visuals 1-6 Learning Standards: LM 2.1.1, AL.15.3, MT 2.1, MT 2.8 Thursday Science Activity – The children will reinforce their science and math concepts while they listen to directions as we try tasting grapes. They will also discuss which of the 5 senses they used throughout this activity. (sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste) Learning Standards: LM 2.1.1, AL.15.3, MT 2.1, MT 2.8, SS 7.2, SS 7.3, SS 7.4, SS 8.1 Friday Math / Science Activity – The children will continue to reinforce their science and math concepts as they use number cards (1-10) and discuss apple trees (visual 22). They will discuss which of the 5 senses they used throughout this activity. (sight) Learning Standards: LM 2.1.1, AL.15.3, MT 2.1, MT 2.8, SS 7.2, SS 7.3, SS 7.4, SS 8.1 Bible / Spiritual Domain Activities & Verse of the Month: “God made the world and everything in it” - ACTS 17:24 Monday Bible / Spiritual Domain Activity – The children will listen as the story of “God Loves Adam and Eve” (Genesis 2:16-17:3) is read to them from the Bible Curriculum Binder New vocabulary and age-appropriate spiritual principles will be introduced and discussed. (ie. God loves me) Learning Standards: SD 2, SD 4, SD 7 Tuesday Bible / Spiritual Domain Activity – The children will review the story of the story of “God Loves Adam and Eve” (Genesis 2:16-17:3) through the use of the Bible Curriculum Binder. New vocabulary and age-appropriate spiritual principles will be reviewed and discussed. Learning Standards: SD 2, SD 4, SD 7 Wednesday Bible / Spiritual Domain Activity – The story of “God Loves Adam and Eve” (Genesis 2:16-17:3) will be reviewed through art as the children use their fine motor skills to color a picture of the story using crayons. Learning Standards: SD 2, SD 4, SD 7, CA 9.1c Thursday Bible / Spiritual Domain Activity – The story of “God Loves Adam and Eve” (Genesis 2:16-17:3) will be reviewed as the teacher act out the story in the classroom. Classroom “dress up” clothes will be used as props. Learning Standards: SD 2, SD 4, SD 7, CA 9.1b Friday Bible / Spiritual Domain Activity – The children will learn the biblical application of “To express thanks to God for making the world” by reviewing the story of “God Loves Adam and Eve”. Learning Standards: SD 2, SD 4, SD 7, 15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, and L.1.6 Social and Emotional Domain Free Play: Children will have opportunities to interact and negotiate with classmates during self-select activities for a substantial portion of the day. Learning Standards: AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, PS 25.1, PS 25.2, PS 25.3, PS 25.4, EL 1.6, LM 2.3, SC 3.4, 15.1.1 Snack: Students will have the opportunity to sit, cooperate, and interact with the teacher and their classmates during snack. Learning Standards: AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, PP 20.1, PP 20.3, PS 25.1, PS 25.2, PS 25.3, PS 25.4, PH 10.1-3, SC 3.1 Lunch: Students will have the opportunity to sit and cooperate with teacher and their classmates during lunch. Learning Standards: AL.15.1, AL.15.2, AL.15.3, AL.15.4, PP 20.1, PP 20.3, PS 25.1, PS 25.2, PS 25.3, PS 25.4, PH 10.1-3, SC 3.1 Physical Domain Large (Gross) Motor Daily Gym (Large Motor): The class will participate in self-select activities involving hoppers, balls, and hoops, scarves, “River Stones”, etc… Along with daily “organized/structured” activities, they will race from one end of gym to other, they will „follow the leader, take “giant” steps” and listen for instruction as to what line they should be walking on. Daily Outdoor Time: The children will walk and play outdoors on the playground daily, weather permitting. They will walk the facility indoors during inclement weather. Monday Organized (Large Motor) Activity – Berry picking relay Tuesday Organized (Large Motor) Activity – Tunnel play (in/out) Wednesday Organized (Large Motor) Activity – catch a firefly using a flash light Thursday Organized (Large Motor) Activity – Riding in the boat Friday Organized (Large Motor) Activity – throwing berries in the basket (balls/hoops) Learning Standards: CA 9.1a, CA 9.1b, CA 9.1c, SS 7.4 SS 7.4, PH 10.1-3, PH 10.4, PH 10.5, L 1.6, PS 25.1, PS 25.2, PS 25.3, PS 25.4, and SD 7 Small (Fine) Motor – Small (Fine) Motor Activity: The class will be able to choose a variety of fine motor experiences like puzzles, play dough, cut & paste, stringing beads, coloring or painting during the day, in addition to planned fine motor activities in the other cognitive areas.
