LED Light System 800
Please read carefully before
putting into operation!
Intended Use
• For industry customers only • Installation must be done by a qualified electrician.
Description
The 3M™ LED Light System 800 consists of 3M™ LED Arrays (which can be connected in series, and which are, due to an integrated load controller,
connected to a single power supply unit with an appropriate power output rating), and the 3M™ Light Enhancement Film LEF 3635 100. The 3M™ LED
Arrays are mounted in the signage light box with 3M™ VHB Adhesive Tape and are connected to the screwmounted power supply unit. You must ensure
that the 3M™ LED Arrays are bonded to a heat conducting substrate, such as steel or aluminum, so that the heat radiating from the back of the LED Arrays
can be dissipated to the frame of the light box.
The 3M™ Light Enhancement Film LEF 3635100 serves to increase the efficiency of the LEDs. It also ensures that the light box is uniformly illuminated.
System Components
The 3M™ LED Light System 800 consists of the following components:
• 3M™ LED Arrays – One or more 3M™ LED Arrays with 5 LEDs each, where each array is backed with 3M™ VHB Adhesive Tape.
12 Arrays per shipping unit / Catalog No. DE-2729-2062-5
• 3M™ Light Enhancement Film LEF 3635-100 / Catalog No. 75-3469-4303-0
• Power Supply Units
The system is powered by switchedmode power supply units from 3M with different power output
ratings: Type PLN30, PLN60 und PLN100 (30 W, 60 W and 100 W).
Recommended Connector and Tool for Installing the
3M™ LED Light System 800
Catalog No. DE-6100-4000-3
The Arrays can be ideally connected with Scotchlok™ UY2 SingleWire Butt
Connectors, which are gelfilled to protect against moisture. An appropriate
tool is, for example, the Scotchlok™ E9Y Crimping Tool:
Catalog No. 80-6091-0004-7
Product designation
30 W @ 24 V
As a rule of thumb:
Typically, 2 to 4 LED Arrays are needed to illuminate a light box with an area of 1 m2,
depending on the transmissibility of the acrylic panel, flexible substrate, etc.
3. Mounting the 3M™ LED Arrays
The LED Arrays are equipped with a selfadhesive 3M™ VHB Tape. The
substrate must be cleaned before mounting the arrays. It should be dry and
free of grease, dust and dirt. After removing the protective liner, simply press
the 3M™ LED Arrays firmly onto the substrate (preferably on the left, right
or top). The substrate must have good heat conducting properties.
Suitable substrates are aluminum profiles or similar good heat conducting
materials. The construction of the light box must be such that the maximum
permissible temperature of the LED
Array (80°C) is not exceeded. You
should also take into account any
possible warming due to sunlight
(it may be necessary to provide
additional cooling or a shutdown
mechanism).
Any necessary temperature measurements should be made on the
PC board next to the middle LED.
Installation Instructions
1. Lining the light box with 3M™ Light Enhancement Film
LEF 3635-100
The first step is to line the light box with LEF Film by applying the adhesive
backed film dry to the inside of the metal enclosure. For details, please refer
to the document LEF Application Information.
2. Determining the number of LED Arrays required and the
appropriate power supply unit
The number of LED Arrays required depends on various factors:
• Size and geometry of the light box
• Desired brightness
• Light transmissibility of the acrylic panel, flexible substrate, etc.
4. Connecting the components
Scotchlok™ UY2 SingleWire Butt Connectors are recommended for ideally
connecting the 3M™ LED Arrays to each other and to the power supply unit.
Please note that the wires are
inserted into the connector openings
without stripping off the insulation,
and they are then clamped securely
into place with the special Scotchlok™
Crimping Tool by applying firm
pressure (do not use ordinary pliers).
The Scotchlok™ UY2 Connectors are
gelfilled to provide excellent protec
tion against moisture.
5. Connecting to the power supply unit
Maximum number of 3M™ LED Arrays that can be connected to each power
supply unit depending on the following power output rating:
30 W = 2 Arrays / 60 W = 4 Arrays / 100 W = 7 Arrays

The wires that are not connected to the power supply unit or another LED
Array must also be terminated with a Scotchlok™ SingleWire Connector to
prevent short circuiting.
Do not do the following:
The solder points of the connecting wires must not be subjected to
mechanical strain (e. g., tensioning).
Power Supply
The manufacturer of the light box must provide a 230 V mains cable. This is
connected to the power supply unit of the LED Array also using Scotchlok™
UY2 SingleWire Connectors. The recommended power supply units have
been tested together with the 3M™ LED Array, and this construction meets
the relevant EMC requirements. If any other power supply is used, 3M cannot
guarantee that the statutory radio interference regulations will be met.

Possible Applications
The LEDs have been provided with special optical equipment that distributes
the light very well throughout the light box. By additionally lining the light box
with 3M™ Light Enhancement Film LEF 3635100, it is possible to achieve
a light output that is increased by up to 163%.
• Single-faced light box
3M™ Light Enhancement Film LEF 3635100 is applied to the sidewalls and
back wall of the singlefaced light box. Incident light from the 3M™ LEDs is
thus very efficiently and diffusely reflected from the sidewalls and back wall
back into the light box. This results in a highly efficient lighting system with
optimal energy utilization.
