Diary
By Theresa Cernoch Parker
When I was working with Jimmy
Brosch on the book Jimmy Brosch
Remembers Twenty Legendary Texas
Czech Bands, I recall him saying,
"We have a lot of young musicians
steppin up to play the Czech songs,
now we need some composers to
write new stuff."
This issue is a tribute to a few of
those composers, including Martha
Viktorin, who has penned some
beautiful and inspirational words to
Czech melodies for Polka Masses.
It was at a Mass last December in
Ellinger with the Dujka Brothers
playing that I so thoroughly enjoyed
the songs selected, I went up to John
Dujka, just knowing it had been
him who wrote them. That's when
he told me of Martha's talent.
Encouragement to those who
like to write songs, or who just like
to write: don't stop. Keep the ideas
showing up on paper (or napkin).
You never know when there will be
another Moon Over Moravia that
strikes a chord!
And congrats to the folks in
Moravia for hosting events on May
7 that celebrate the songwriter,
musician, winemaker, and dancehall
proprietors.

About Texas Polka News
The Texas Polka News was started by Julius
Tupa of Houston in 1987 with the mission
to preserve and promote polka music and
dance. When Julius passed away in 2002,
his wife, Marie, continued as publisher,
and his friend, John Rivard, took the reins
as volunteer editor. John stepped down as
editor in June 2014, and Marie sold the
paper to Theresa Cernoch Parker, who
resumed publishing in September 2014.
In addition to polka, the paper covers
other dance hall music including Country,
Western Swing, and Cajun, and celebrates
live music, such as Opry, across the state.
Theresa also founded polkabeat.com in
2010 to honor the memory of her dad,
Willie “Bill” Cernoch, to promote polka
music and heritage.

SING A SONG
From the TPN Archives: May 2003
TEXAS RISING TALENT
(As reported in the May 2003 issue of
TPN) Dr. John Dujka, senior member
of the Dujka Brothers and Professor of
Piano/Music Theory at Blinn College,
is a talented songwriter with hits such
as “When I Dance With You.” But Prof.
Dujka also recognizes rising Texas
Talent, and gives voice to their new
songs.
Our ears perked up at Hallettsville
as we heard the Dujka Brothers doing a
new song with great lyrics and a patriotic
(pro-America) tone. We asked, and John
confirmed it was a new song written by
Daniel Klapuch. We recognized Daniel
Klapuch as coauthor (with another rising
Texas Talent Mark Hermes) of “Moon
Over Moravia,” a beautiful waltz about
the Moravia Store (and Texas heritage)
that has made it big here in Texas in the
past year. We found Daniel to learn more.
In talking to this quiet and
unassuming tall Texan, we were excited
to learn that Daniel is also the author
of two other great new songs that the
Dujkas have been performing recently.
These two new polkas are “Grandpa
Drank Too Much at the St. John’s Picnic,”
and “St. Arnold’s Polka (the Patron Saint
of Beer).” As the Dujkas have performed
these songs over the past several months,
crowds spontaneously appear at the stage

Daniel Klapuch and Mark Hermes
to listen and enjoy the refreshing beat
and humorous lyrics. The Dujkas plan on
recording both songs.
We learned from Daniel that the song
that debuted in Hallettsville is called
“Immigrant’s Waltz.” It is based on the true story of
Daniel’s grandmother arriving in
this country in the late 1800s from
Czechoslovakia, via Bremen, New York,
New Orleans, and Galveston.
We are pleased to see the Dujka
Brothers giving voice to Klapuch’s talent.
Daniel was born and raised in Moravia.
He tried Nashville in the 80s, learned a
lot but couldn’t quite break into the big
time. Now he’s here in Texas with his
guitar, writing Czech heritage music.
Nashville’s loss. Our gain. Texas talent

From Our Readers
The Texas Polka News is great and the

super. Is it time for me to renew? I don't
want to miss one.
E.J. Bayer, Weimar
Enclosed is my check to renew the great
Polka News. I really enjoyed the article
on Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys.
They were in their heyday when I was
a girl. One year on our return trip from
Colorado, we came thru the Panhandle
and stopped in Turkey, Texas. The town
erected a most unusual monument
honoring their hometown boy. It is
round with 8 panels depicting his life
history with a flagpole on top, as he
served in WWII. I took pictures of
every panel. Turkey is a typical small
Texas town with a few crossroads, but
it comes alive on his birthday in April.

Saturday, May 7th, all Texas roads,
well not all roads, but FM 957,
immortalized in the song written
by Daniel Klapuch and Mark

of Moravia. Moravia Fest, a new
celebration in Central Texas, will be

The festivities kick off at 11

Songwriter Serenade Competition
held in the Moravia Parish Hall.
The contest began as a partnership

the belief that they have a good song
and have passed the preliminary
culling process will make the journey
to the parish hall stage on the 7th to
compete against their brethren for
$5,000 in prize money and a trip to an
international competition.
These semifinalists have been
selected by submitting a minimum of
three song lyrics and MP3s. A panel
of preliminary judges listened to
the many entries and selected these
15 musicians on two basic criteria:
lyrics and melody. A song is defined
as a melody with lyrics. When the
participant takes the stage in Moravia
there will be a new set of judges who
will rate the song and performance in
four specific areas:
• Lyrics (imagery, story, creativity,
originality)
• Melody (structure, phrasing,
rhythm)
• Performing Ability (vocal,
musicianship)
• Stage Presence/Audience Rapport
After the preliminary rounds
(and a 2-3 pm lunch break), seven
finalists will perform to determine
the winner, which will be announced
at 4:30 pm. In addition to the cash
prizes, the winner will open a concert
at 8 pm that evening at the Bugle Boy
Listening Room in La Grange.
The Bugle Boy concert will feature
the winner and the contest judges
from that afternoon. The judges
are three award-winning singer/
songwriters who call Texas home:
Susan Gibson: writer of Wide
Open Spaces, one of the largest selling
records in country/pop music and
music teacher.
Walt Wilkins: writer of songs
for Ricky Scaggs, Kenny Rogers, Pat
Green, and many more.
Kevin Welch: a former Nashville
writer of songs for Moe Bandy,
Waylon Jennings, Garth Brooks, and
many more.

By Gary E. McKee
Yes, there really was a full harvest
moon over the historic Moravia
Store that inspired Daniel Klapuch
and Mark Hermes to hatch an idea
about a song celebrating the glories
of this beautiful Lavaca County
community.
Back in the late 1900s, 1999
to be specific, Daniel and Mark,
sitting on the tailgate of a pickup
truck, with a napkin for a notepad,
the two looked around and began
formulating ideas. The moon that
still illuminates the store and
farmland was a lyrically defining
choice. The chorus came first, which
set the basic rhythm for the song, but
the music would come later.
Over the next several months,
they would work on the lyrics,
chronicling the hard work of the
farmers and their labors being
rewarded with a cold beer to ease
the aching muscles while relaxing
with family and fellow farmers at the
Moravia Store.
To help friends and future
friends locate this cultural oasis,
which truly is "the way it used to be,"
the line (FM) "957 leads right to the

become a

With the lyrics now complete,
John made some key (musical)
changes to achieve the smooth waltz
sound for which the song is known.
John and Mark Dujka recorded
the song and put it on one of their
early albums. The song was picked
up by the polka radio stations and
Daniel, on a trip home, was driving
with his wife to Shiner when Moon
over Moravia came through the
radio speakers taking him totally by
surprise.
NEW YORK CITY?
The power of Moon over Moravia is
such that Daniel received a phone
call from a professor at Columbia
University in New York City. He had
somehow come across it and was
using the song to illustrate Texas
Czech music. The song has also
been recorded by the Vrazels, the
Czechaholics, the Red Ravens, and
Mark Halata, has titled one of his
CDs Moon over Moravia.
In a backwards compliment, a
musician told Daniel that he sure
liked singing Moon Over Moravia,
but at an all-day music event he had
to sing it SIX times to satisfy the
dancing crowd.
Texas Polka News - April 2016
Another song that Daniel is
proud of is The Immigrant's Waltz
which was the result of hearing his
grandma tell the story of coming
to Texas from Europe on board the
Breslau. He described the vessel
as a "ship of dreams," a phrase he
borrowed from the movie Titanic,
that was also an immigrants'
transport.
Mark Hermes, accordionist
and manager of the Texas Czech
Heritage and Cultural Center in La
Grange, was playing accordion in
the Texas Dream Band at the time
of co-writing Moon Over Moravia.
He is also one of the founders of the
Czechaholics and has been one of
the local music community leaders
for many years.
The Dujka Brothers, have also
put pen to paper many times coming
up with crowd favorites such as Pivo
and Kolaches, Grandpa Drank Too
Much at the St. John Picnic, and
When I Dance With You to name a
few.
Martha Viktorin, has been
translating songs into Czech for
many years. See elsewhere in this
issue of TPN for a profile of her
talent.
The Moravia Store was
established in 1889. Frankie and
Henrietta Filip will celebrate their
20th anniversary of operating this
truly authentic dancehall and saloon
on April 30, with Mark Halata
and Texavia for-sure performing
Moon Over Moravia. Remember 957

accordion plays in 3/4 time.

carry out his plan to hold worship
services outdoors. Midway through
mass Fr. H. Wenkles called upon his
flock, "Now let us join all the angels
and saints in singing the praises of
your Lord." However, instead of the
organist playing a sacred hymn, the
accordionist, Gene Retka, and his
band launched into a Polish polka
aptly titled for an outside Mass,
Let The Son Shine In. Throughout
the service, the congregation sang
and swayed happily combining
their affirmation of faith with the
alternating of their feet.
In composing a Polka Mass,
a musician either alters the lyrics
of polka songs to become more
appropriate for a spiritual setting
or creates an entirely new piece of
polka-style music to sing with the
usual sacred text. Robert Walser,
musicologist and Polka Mass
participant, states that the exuberant
polka music motivates participants
to "worship more vigorously."
He also asserts that the Polka
Mass "brings the community into
the church" because it involves music
and lyrics that the congregations are
more familiar with.
BLESSED BY THE VATICAN
The Second Vatican Council's
decision in the early 1960s to
modernize the Catholic Church,
slowly opened the door to reflecting
the culture of its parishioners. Latin
was phased out, and English, Czech,
Polish, and Spanish were allowed,
reflecting the ethnic culture of the
parish.
The change in music came a
little slower but by the 1970s, Mass
was being celebrated with mariachi,
folk, rock, jazz, rhythm and blues,
and polka-flavored melodies and
instrumentation.
The first Polka Mass is
generally credited to Father George
Balasko in Ohio in 1972. Fr.
Balasko, a musician, had attained
some distinction in seminary by
composing Have Another Beer which
was recorded by several bands.
Father Frank Perkovich, also a
musician, of Minnesota got wind
of Fr. Balasko's popular services
and began holding his own. The
masses requested more Polka
Masses, inspiring the Father to begin
recording albums and touring other
parishes spreading the word of God
through polka music.
Fr. Perkovich reached his
pinnacle of achievement by
performing at the "Carnegie Hall of
the Church", i.e. St. Peter's Basilica
at the Vatican and with the ultimate
audience, Pope John Paul II.
Another Minnesotan, Fr. Robert
Kapoun, the "Polka Padre" led the
church band on his own accordion.
The Polka Padre had already written
and recorded over 50 secular songs
before he attempted the religious
side. His first Polka Mass in 1976
featured polkas, waltzes, mazurkas,
schottisches, and even a tango
performed during the service.
A Minnesota state senator and
musician, Florian Chmielewski
began writing and recording polka
services for other faiths, and took his
band on tour internationally with his
album Polkas For Heaven's Sake.

Inspired Divinely, Martha
Fajkus Viktorin, a first generation
Czech Texian, without professional
music training, and knowing a
little piano, began writing lyrics to
popular Czech songs. Martha, whose
mother spoke Czech exclusively,
was raised with the language. She
remembers working in the fields
around Beasley (in Fort Bend
County) singing Czech polkas and
waltzes as her family and others
picked cotton.
The family attended parish
picnics and when she reached the
appropriate age she and her friends
attended dances on Saturday nights
where the bands had names like
Patek, Baca, and Krenek. The sound
of Czech music became the joy of her
life.

songs. Martha became quite good
at it, and now translates from Czech
into English secular tunes for the
Dujka Brothers. If you visit the
Brothers website, there are some
translations posted there. When
John Dujka was producing the
yet unrecorded song Moon Over
Moravia, he thought that it could
use a little of the local language and
turned to Martha to translate the
chorus into Czech which boosted the
song up a notch in validity (not that
it needed it).
The only song Martha has
written (both music and lyrics)
is titled You Are My Savior. She
collaborated on the lyrics with friend
and songwriter Wilma Kapavik.
WE ARE ONE IN SPIRIT
Martha started singing the Polka
Mass when she was a member of
the East Bernard Czech Singers
(1986 - 2000), which consisted of
seven ladies who decided to preserve
their Czech heritage by singing the
music they love in Czech. The EBCS
made several recordings with their
background music performed and
produced by John Dujka.
During this time Martha was
experimenting with adapting
Christian English lyrics to the Texas
Czech polkas and waltzes; as she,
rightly so, believes them to be more
fluid and melodic. This worked out
great as Polka Masses now have fresh
regionally adapted songs. Several
members of the EBCS, who had
traveled up north, brought back the
news about Polka Masses.
Julius Tupa had also ventured
to the north and became friends
with Fr. Balasko and returned with
the idea of a Texas Polka Mass.
After some rehearsals with the
EBCS, Julius' band, The Sound
Connection introduced to the
Texian polka public, the concept of a
Polka Mass at the 1994 Texas Polka
Music Awards event in Sealy with
Fr. Balasko in attendance. This was
not the first Mass as the group had
sung several Polka Masses with Fr.
Balasko on his visits to Texas. As
expected the Texian Catholics were
uplifted and inspired by the music,
and occasional Polka Masses are
now celebrated throughout Texas.
Today, the Holy Cross Parish in
East Bernard, as other parishes do,
still conducts Polka Masses with
regularity. Mark Dujka is the lead
musician playing the accordion, and
the band consists of a tuba player,
guitarist, and keyboard player from
the congregation, and Al Sulak
occasionally sits in on trumpet to
complement the 40+ choir members.
Their next Polka Mass is Saturday,
April 2 at 5 pm in East Bernard at
Holy Cross Church.
Martha shared one of her
favorite tunes she has written lyrics
for below. A special thanks to
Martha for her patience with this
writer.

Help Celebrate Love
and Polka
By Theresa Parker
John and I will be married 10
years this May. Along with all the
regular marriage promises, we
vowed to celebrate our nuptials
every five years with, what else, a
polka party. Our wedding reception
on May 20, 2006 was held at Sokol
Hall in Houston. Piano man Gene
Lichnovsky provided dinner music
and Mark Halata & Texavia played
for the dance.
On our fifth anniversary, we
again celebrated at Sokol Hall with
Texavia. This year, on our 10th, the
party will be held at SPJST Lodge 88
in Houston on Sat., May 14. Mark
Halata & Texavia will once again
provide the music, and Gene plans
to join in for a few numbers.
I’m also celebrating another
anniversary as polkabeat.com begins
its sixth year of promoting polka and
Texas dancehall music. As Danny
Zapletal told me the other day,
“When you first started polkabeat, I
was thinking ‘There’s no way she’ll
be able to keep sending out weekly
announcements.’ Glad I was wrong.”
Actually Danny, I’ve had those
same thoughts often, but what keeps
me going are the comments I get
from polkabeat fans. Especially if
I happen to send out the Weekend
Lineup e-newsletter on Friday
instead of Thursday. I get emails
from fans wondering where it is.
John and I feel very blessed to
have each other, and our wonderful
family and friends. Join us on May
14 to celebrate love and polka. The
dance is from 8-11:30 pm, and there’s
no cover charge. Doors open at 7
pm, and you can purchase your
favorite German and American fare
from the Sauerkraut Food Truck.
We’ll also have snacks and kolaches
available. If you’d like to reserve a
table, contact the Lodge at
713-869-5767.

Both Eddie and Carl professed
their love of polka. “It’s music that
speaks to me,” Carl said. "There is
nothing artier or cooler than an

encouraging that young Czech bands
in Texas are pulling together their
own sounds and doing really well.”

A musical adventure. That’s how IJ
Eddie Biegaj described Brave Combo
during a recent broadcast on his
Bad Boy Show on the Polka Jammer
network. “No matter the genre you
seem to nail it,” Eddie told BC leader
Carl Finch.
“We try to be respectful of
whatever style we are playing, whether
polka, cumbia, whatever. As outsiders
we try really hard to achieve greatness.
Not falling into a novelty genre has
been most rewarding,” Carl told
Eddie’s listeners.
Eddie asked Carl to select the
songs he played around the interview,
kicking it off with a Polish polka
Green Maple from BC’s latest album
The Liminal Zone (denTone). Carl
described a liminal zone as that
place where you’re likely to be the
least inhibited allowing creativity to
happen. (That explains why there is a
song on the album called Washer &
Dryer.)

BRAVE COMBO CRAZY
Brave Combo celebrated 35 years
of musical adventure in 2014. The
group now consists of Carl, who
plays guitar, keys, and accordion;
Lyle Atkinson on bass, who by the
way was the group's original bassist;
Danny O'Brien on brass and Alan
Emert on drums, both longtime
members; and new recruit, Robert
Hokamp, on guitar and trumpet,
who can also play a mean slide
guitar.
This spring, the band will be at
the Muenster Germanfest, several
Dallas area Concert Series shows, the
Denton Arts & Jazz Festival on May
1, the Houston Polish Fest on May 7,
and the National Polka Festival on
May 28 and 29.

any more. So, what can Polish
Fest attendees expect to hear from
BC? "They will hear lots of polkas,
waltzes, and obereks, plus the
standard Brave Combo craziness,"
Carl said. "Our original woodwind
player, Tim Walsh, will be joining
us at this festival and in Ennis. In
the last several years, Tim has been
playing with Austin accordionist/
concertina player, Bradley J.
Williams, in a group called The
Polkasonics. They have been
focused, primarily on Polish and
Tejano-style polkas, so Tim will be
bringing a strong Polish spirit with
him for us to inject into the music."
Carl mentioned there will be
three of the original four members
of the band at the event, "so we will
be reaching way back into the BC
catalog," he said. Some of Carl's fave
Polish polkas are Pije Kuba, Hosa
Dyna, Green Maple, Why, Oh Why,
Northside Hop, Jukebox Cheer, and
the Polish National Anthem.

includes a classic It Took Us All Night
to Get Home Last Night. "That song
was a hit for Whoopie John Wilfhart
in the 1950s, and I believe it was
based on a traditional German tune,"
Carl said. "I heard a great version
a few years ago by David Slovak,
of Czech and Then Some and he
sent me a recording, including the
additional lyrics you hear on our
version. I just think it's a great song
and captures a certain vibe that
reflects the scene really well."
Carl has also had success as
a songwriter with two of his best
known, somewhat signature songs Do Something Different and Flying
Saucer. "All of our polka fans know
these two very well," he said. And
one of his favorite orignal waltzes is
called Civilized from the Grammywinning album Lets Kiss. "I think it
has more meaning today than when
I wrote it," Carl said, noting the
trend toward uncivility these days,
especially among our politicians.
Celebrate Polish
Heritage in Houston
The 10th Polish Festival is set for
May 6-8 at Our Lady of Czestochowa
Church in the Spring Branch area
of Houston. The event opens Friday
evening with a recital of Adam
Golka, world-renown pianist. Born
and raised in Texas to a family of
musicians from Poland, Adam has
won widespread critical and popular
acclaim with his “brilliant technique
and real emotional depth” (The
Washington Post).
On Saturday, enjoy performances
by Brian Marshall, Brave Combo
(6:30-9:30 pm), Edward Winiarski,
Dance Group Wawel, Polish School
Children Dancers, and the Polka
Slavic Band. Chris Rybak, the
accordion cowboy, will be on stage
Sunday, along with more great
entertainment. Feast on traditional
Polish food and beer, buy chances to
win some outstanding raffle prizes,
“win” a few things in the silent
auction, and turn the kids loose on
the children’s activities. See ad, p. 9.

It's an Accordion
Extravaganza!
Texas Folklife is pleased to announce
the Big Squeeze Tenth Anniversary
Extravaganza Concert, to be held on
Sat., May 7 at the Bullock Texas State
History Museum. The concert will
celebrate the 10-year anniversary of
Texas Folklife’s Big Squeeze statewide
youth accordion contest, and feature
past contest winners who will showcase
a variety of Texas-based accordion
genres including conjunto, polka,
Cajun, and zydeco.
In this important anniversary year,
Texas Folklife is focusing its resources
on celebrating the successful fruition
of the program and showcasing the
past winners of the Big Squeeze. These
young accordion players have become
stars and leaders in their communities.
Following this year of celebration, the
Big Squeeze will be back on the road to
look for exceptional young accordion
players across the state.
In addition, with the recent
rekindling of the Apprenticeship
Program, Texas Folklife is helping
to nurture young accordion talent
by pairing young apprentices with
mentors throughout the state. (See
related story, p. 25).
Since its launch in 2007, the Big
Squeeze has helped Texas Folklife carry
out its mission to preserve and promote
Texas’s diverse cultural heritage.
Through the Big Squeeze program,
Texas Folklife has built a reputation as
a champion of Texas accordion music
genres, and supported over 200 young,
talented players in their efforts to carry
on these community-based accordion

music traditions.
To better nurture the young talent
throughout the state, Texas Folklife
restructured the contest in 2014 to
include three Grand Prize Winners,
each from a main accordion genre—
polka, zydeco, and conjunto. The polka
genre included German, Czech, and
Polish traditions, while Cajun/zydeco
included Creole and Cajun musical
traditions, and conjunto included
norteño and Tejano.
As a result of these efforts, the Big
Squeeze welcomed a diverse class of
six total champions in 2014 and 2015,
including the first-ever female contest
winner, Elisabeth Kelley (Cajun).
“Many past winners of the contest
have gone on to form their own bands
and launch professional performance
or music education careers. We are
excited this year to be able to bring
them back to Austin to celebrate their
achievements and highlight the impact
of the Big Squeeze as a statewide
program," said Texas Folklife Programs
& Development Director Charlie
Lockwood. See ad, this page.

seniors! This giant parade twists
through historic downtown Ennis and
is sure to please," Danny said.
On Sunday, another festival
tradition continues as Danny will
broadcast his Polka Party Show on
KBEC (Waxahachie) from 9-11 am.
For more than 48 years, Johnnie I.
Krajca hosted the show and started
the live broadcast at the first NPF
in 1967. The festival committee
worked with Johnnie to bring the live
broadcast back to the festival in 2005.
Danny has continued the tradition
with the KBEC Polka Party and will
feature the Mark Vyhlidal Orchestra
from Freemont, Nebraska at the KJT
Hall for this year's broadcast.
Sunday morning Father Henry
Drozd will say mass at 10 am for the
Polka Mass held at the Knights of
Columbus Hall.
SOAK UP CZECH CULTURE
The National Polka Festival gives
you the chance to experience Czech
traditions, religious customs, dancing,
tastes, sights, sounds, and "a little
bit of the Czech Lands" throughout
historic downtown and at the three
spacious air-conditioned halls
(KJT, Knights of Columbus, and
Sokol Halls). Enjoy a weekend of
polka dancing, Czech foods, and 19
sensational polka bands including
Grammy-award winning Brave
Combo.
One daily admission includes all
three halls: Friday - $8; Saturday $15; Sunday - $10. Another popular
attraction in the last few years is a
country concert held at Sokol Hall
on Saturday night. Admission to this
event is separate from the polka fest
admission. The festival committee
is working on booking a band for
this year's concert. The concert has
always featured some of Texas' favorite
country artists, including the Bellamy
Brothers last year.
No need to drive from venue to
venue. You can ride the free shuttle
buses from Quality Inn to downtown
and to all three fraternal halls.
"Our festival continues in tradition
and style similar to those early
celebrations," said NPF Executive
Director Danny Zapletal, whose
father, Raymond, was one of the
founders.
"The founders and their successors
have insisted on maintaining the
authenticity and values of the Czech
tradition even today. The parade
always has a Czech theme. The bands
that perform at the festival must play
90% polka music along with the fun
folk dances. The festival has taken
years of work from the Polka Festival
Committee, Ennis Chamber of
Commerce, and the Ennis Convention
& Visitors Bureau, and all of our
volunteers," he said.
Thanks to the work of these
teams, this festival today is one of the
largest of its kind in the United States
attracting as many as 50,000 people,
while maintaining the feel of "a little
bit of old Czechoslovakia."
What's Your Favorite
Memory?
How many years have you been
attending the National Polka Festival?
What are some of the moments you'll
never forget? Maybe a special band
performance, being there with family
and friends, the food, the costumes,
challenging weather.
Tell us about your favorite
memory, with a photo if you have
it, by sending an email to theresa@
polkabeat.com, or mail to Texas Polka
News, PO Box 800183, Houston, TX
77280. Send it in by April 25. We'll
pick the top five and each person will
receive a free day-pass to the festival.
One of my favorite memories was meeting DJ
Johnnie I at the 2012 festival. He visited with
me on air about polkabeat.com.

fun for the whole family.

Scenes from Houstonfest: Schottische line dance and a great big polka smile!/Parker photos
to doll costuming, gingerbread
house decorating, acting, puppetry,
photography, and einzelplattler – that
fun couples dance where the guy
slaps his shoes and thighs while the
girl twirls, then they dance the waltz.
Of course our favorite events
are the polka band, folk dance, and
chorus. The top three winners in
these categories were:
Polka Band: Clements (Sugar
Land), Lanier Middle School
(Houston), College Park (The
Woodlands)
Folk Dance: Kingwood,
Greenville (near Dallas). The
Woodlands High School dance group
placed fourth and Clements placed
fifth.
“Houston has some of the best
German folk dancers in the state
right now,” said Valina Polka, who
teaches and mentors the Houstonarea students. “That's a lot of
youngsters who know how to polka
and waltz! I'm so proud of them and
of the leaders of Keine Kunst who
have also been teaching and coaching
this year.”
Einzelplattler: Deer Park,
Kingwood, College Park
Chorus: Clements, Cinco Ranch
(Katy), Deer Park
DAS IST LUSTIG
What started out by a small group of
German teachers over 40 years ago as
an idea to help encourage the study
of German and make it fun, has now
evolved into a competition with over
1,500 students from more than 90
schools across Texas participating
in more than 40 different events at
the state level. This makes the Texas
system of German contests the largest
in the nation and the only one of its
kind.
Students from each regional
(Houstonfest-Houston, SprachfestSan Antonio, and Winterfest-Dallas/
FW) who place in the top 5 for each
event, qualify to compete at the state
level. Each year, Texas State German
Contest sees an average of 60+
schools and more than 1,000 students
competing for state titles!
As the students say, “Das gibt es
nur in Texas.”

“Donnie has one of the best dance
bands around and we will miss having
him play for us. We want to thank him
and wish him all the best,” said Sharon
Mueller, Club President.
The Pearl City Dance Club has been
dancing at Turner Hall in Yoakum for
more than 60 years. Dances for the rest
of the year feature Al Sulak and the
Country Sounds on June 18; Lost Cause
on Sept. 10; and the always fun Night in
Old Pearl City Fundraiser, held this year

RR IN NB
That’s texting language for Red Ravens
in New Braunfels. The Goodtime Polka
& Waltz Dance Club will host those
rascally Ravens on Sat., April 23. You’ll
love the great wood floor at the Eagles
Hall and the friendly club members.

MAJEK ORCHESTRA
FEATURED AT SLAVNOST
The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural
Center in La Grange will host its 15th
Annual Slavnost (May Fest) on Sun.,
May 15. Each year the Center recognizes
families who emigrated to Texas from
European Czech lands. It’s very fitting
that the band providing music for the
day – the Leo Majek Orchestra – was
started by Leo Majek Jr., who emigrated
to Cameron in the late 1800s, then later
settled in Corpus Christi. The band now
features the fifth generation of the family
Page 29
to continue the tradition. They will play
from 12:30-5:30 pm for a dance on the
Center’s new outdoor dance floor. Check
the ad on p. 25 for the schedule for the day
that promises fun for the whole family!
LOTSA MUSIC IN BRENHAM
Brenham has one of the longest-running
Maifest celebrations in the country. This
year, the residents will celebrate the 126th
rendition on May 6 and 7 at Fireman’s
Park. Tradition calls for a parade, junior
and senior royal courts, maypole dance,
all-you-can-eat Bluebell Ice Cream, and
lotsa music! Friday night features some of
Texas’ best new talent – Ben Laskoskie,
the Amalang Brothers, Steven Marshall,
and the Blue Grooves. On Saturday
afternoon enjoy the sounds of the Round
Top Brass Band and Gene Hackemack.
Kick up your boot heels for some country
Saturday night with Abigail Taylor and
the Risky Liver Band, Austin Meade, and
the Wesley Westbrook Band. See ad p. 17.
GINNIN' & DANCIN'
It’s great when you can combine a festival
featuring great music and learn about
history all at the same time. The 27th
Cotton Gin Festival in Burton on April
15 and 16 not only presents great music,
food, and fun, you get a chance to see how
a cotton gin works. This year’s fest pays
tribute to Eli Whitney. No, he wasn’t an
accordion player, but he did invent the
cotton gin. Learn more about the inventor
and watch the historic ginning of a cotton
bale at 3 pm. Dance through Saturday
