OPTIMIZATION OF BIOLOGICAL
WASTEWATER AFTERPURIFICATION BY
USE OF WETLAND COMPLEX WITH
HIGHER VEGETATION IN THE ARCTIC
CIRCUMSTANCES

Actuality of the project’s topic:

A serious problem in the wastewater treatment systems is the
nitrogen and phosphorus mineral forms formation as the result of
the microbiological organic oxidation in the treated wastewater.

One of the most effective, cost-efficient, and ecological method of
nutrients extraction from the sewage is the usage of higher aquatic
vegetation as an absorbing element.

Purification effect is reached due to the plants capability to absorb
actively nitrogen and phosphorus mineral forms in the course of
biomass growing. Nitrogen and phosphorus extraction is
conducted while periodical mowing the grown plant biomass.

Further utilization of the gathered plant mass harvest makes for
ecological orientation of this purification problem solving.

Higher vegetation usage for wastewater purification is a prevalent
practice, but there is hardly a precedent of using this technology in
the Arctic circumstances.
The main objective of the project
 to optimize the realization of this wastewater
afterpurification technology for northern
conditions.
Methods


Project duration is two years
The works will be conducted on the base of the purification plant
wetlands in the settlement Shonguy near Murmansk city.
 Following activities are to be conducted
during the project:

Testing area organization

Conducting of a number of experiments in order to search an
optimal vegetable object, which has maximal indexes as a
“biological pump”. It should have maximum growth rate and
nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in tissues.

Conducting a set of chemical measurements of sewage quality
during its purification and of the plant chemical composition

 Elaboration of the wastewater afterpurification technology
with the use of higher water vegetation in the Arctic
circumstances in order to its further dissemination.
