The Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired
presents iFocus. Tips on using the vision accessibility
features in iOS. In today's installment we'll look at using
the timer.
Hello my name is Douglas Walker. Today we will be
checking out our timer. And we'll be using our iPhone for
today's demonstration. You know we have a really great
timer built right into our clock app. So how about we go
ahead and launch our clock app to find our timer and get
started?
All right our clock app is right here on our desktop so we'll
go ahead and just right flick to it on our desktop here. So
we'll just right flick.

Okay so here's our clock app. So we'll just single finger
double tap to activate it here. And we'll just single finger
double tap.
Voiceover
Clock edit button.
Douglas Walker
Okay our clock app is open and we're actually placed
within our world clock tab here. Okay so how about we
first begin by talking about our clock face interface. Now
we have five tabs. They're actually located across the
bottom edge of our screen here. And activating any of
these tabs will actually open up a totally new screen in
which we're able to interact.
I tell you it really is like having five apps right within one
app because each one of these tabs is going to do a
totally different time related task for us. Again our tabs of
course are located along the bottom edge of our screen
here. Our timer tab, like we said our world clock tab is
currently selected, but our timer tab is in the bottom right
hand corner of our screen.
So how about we just touch in the bottom right corner to
find our timer tab? So we'll just touch down here.

Douglas Walker
Okay so there's our timer tab. So we'll just single finger
double tap to select it or to activate our timer tab. So we'll
just single finger double tap anywhere here.
Voiceover
Selected timer tab. 5:05.
Douglas Walker
All right our timer tab has now opened. You know I tend to
use our timer more than any other part of our clock app. I
tell you it really is super easy to use. So how about we
begin by first just exploring our screen. And we'll actually
set our timer as we explore here. Okay at the very top
center of our screen and just below the time up here in our
status bar is our heading. So we'll just orient ourself to the
top of our timer interface here by just touching our timer
heading here. So we'll just touch our heading at the top
center of our screen here.

Great so there's our timer heading. So we know for sure
that we're actually in our timer tab here, okay? So we can
just begin right flicking from here and we'll be able to
totally explore our timer tab. So we'll go ahead and just
right flick from here. We'll right flick.
Voiceover
Two hours. Picker item adjustable. Swipe up or down with
one finger to adjust the value.
Douglas Walker
Okay so here we find our picker item and our alarm is
already set for two hours. You know our picker item is
exactly what it sounds like. We're able to flick up or we can
flick down our screen and this will allow us to pick our
desired time. Now we heard voiceover announce a lot of
great hints because our hints are turned on. So we got
some really great information there and those hints let us
know exactly how we interact with our picker item. Now
like we said, we're on our hour picker item. So we can just
flick up or down of course to change our timer here.
So how about we set our timer, it's already on two hours
so how about we set it for four hours? That's kind of a long
timer but why not? We'll just flick up through our hours and
pick four hours here. So we'll just flick up.

Three hours.
Douglas Walker
Okay and there's three hours there so we'll flick up again.
Voiceover
Four hours.
Douglas Walker
Great. Now we have our timer set for four hours. That's a
long time though. Anyway how about we just right flick to
our minute picker here. We just right flick and we can set
our minutes. We'll just right flick here.
Voiceover
Fifteen minutes. Picker item adjustable. Swipe up or down
with one finger to adjust the value.
Douglas Walker
Okay and we get those great hints again. And again here
we have our minute picker. Our minute picker is already
set for 15 minutes so how about we just flick up, and we'll
change our picker from 15 to 30 minutes here. So we'll just
flick up our screen and we'll flick until we get to 30
minutes.

16 minutes.
Douglas Walker
16, keep flicking up.
Voiceover
17 minutes. 18 minutes.
Douglas Walker
Now every time I flick up of course we advance.
Voiceover
19 minutes.
Douglas Walker
We could flick down and go backwards if we wanted to but
we're flicking to thirty.
Voiceover
Twenty minutes. Twenty one minutes.
Douglas Walker
And you can flick faster up the screens here.
Voiceover
Twenty, twenty, twenty, twenty five minutes.

Twenty five.
Voiceover
Twenty six minutes. Twenty seven, twenty eight minutes.
Twenty nine minutes. Thirty minutes.
Douglas Walker
Okay that's great. Now we have our timer set for four
hours and thirty minutes. So we got a lot of time once we
get it started here. How about we go ahead and right flick.
We'll right flick to our next element here. Now that we have
our timers' time set we'll just right flick.
Voiceover
When timer ends, ripples button.
Douglas Walker
Okay so here we have our when timer ends button. So
activating our when timer ends button is going to give us a
list of different sounds and we'll have the ability to pick the
sound that will begin playing once our timer has finished
counting down to zero. You know we've been given some
really cool sounds here to choose from. Now we're not
going to explore our when timer ends button, however
once we activate it it's really easy just to right click through

our sounds list that pops up and choose our preferred
sound here.
Now we've already also been given a really cool item
called when stop playing. It's at the very bottom of our
sound list. Now if we choose stop playing it actually gives
us the ability for our timer to act as our sleep timer. So
when our timer has finished counting down our audio app
will actually stop playing for us. I tell you this really work
great with our different music apps like Apple Music or
Pandora or Spotify. It also works really well with some our
other audiobooks apps too. It really does make a super
nice sleep timer for us which is pretty cool.
Okay so we'll go ahead and just right flick from here. We'll
just right flick.
Voiceover
Cancel dimmed button.
Douglas Walker
Okay so here we have our cancel button. You've probably
already guessed that we would just activate our cancel
button here if we wanted to just cancel our current timer
and start from zero again. We could kind of zero it out
from here. All right so let's go ahead and just right flick
from here. We'll just right flick.

Voiceover
Start button.
Douglas Walker
Okay so here we find our start button and our start button
just so happens to be the last of our buttons, or the last of
our elements here on our screen because if we were to
right flick again we would actually be placed right back in
our tabs along the bottom edge of our screen here. We
don't want that so now that we're on our start button how
about we just go ahead and single finger double tap. We'll
get our four hour and thirty minute timer here going. So
we'll just single finger double tap to do that. We'll double
tap.
Voiceover
Pause.
Douglas Walker
Okay our timer has started counting down for us here. We
heard voiceover announce that our start button actually
turned into a pause button. So you know we could just
single finger double tap again if we wanted to of course
just pause our timer. Then we could just double tap again
to start it up again. That's pretty great for us.

Using the Timer
Okay so that's just how easy it is to use our built in timer
here. You know it's also good to know that if we do have a
timer set that we're actually able to exit our timer app and
it's going to continue to run in the background. So we're
going to receive of course all of our timers or timed events
exactly when we need them. That is of course unless our
timer or our iPhone happens to be turned off. We don't
want that. So now we have a greatest timer to use while
doing things like cooking or like we said earlier, using as
our sleep timer. You know that's pretty great.
Again my name is Douglas Walker. Take care and I'll see
you next time.
