About HISD NRT Program
Iowa Assessments measures student
achievement and growth across a continuum of
learning standards in the subject areas of
Reading, Language, Mathematics, Science, and
Social Studies.
The Houston Independent School District (HISD) employs a Norm Referenced Test (NRT), the IOWA
Achievement Test, which is a multiple-choice assessment that will help educators assess students’ potential
achievement. This instrument provides a valid and reliable tool for objective measurement of achievement.
Beginning with the 2014-15 school year, HISD implemented Riverside’s Iowa, Logramos-3, and CogAT-7
assessments following the use of Pearson’s Stanford-10, Aprenda-3, and NNAT-2 assessments.
How are Iowa test results used?
The Iowa Assessments are a comprehensive set of measures that are designed to provide a thorough assessment of
a student’s progress in skills and standards that are essential to successful learning. HISD uses the Iowa
Assessments in grades Kindergarten-12 for identification purposes.
Logramos measures academic achievement and
progress of Spanish-speaking students in
Kindergarten through Grade 8. Based upon and
closely mirroring the scope and sequence of the
Iowa Assessments in content, style, and
structure.
How will parents receive results?
Parents will receive the Student Profile Narrative report which is a one page report that includes the score profile,
graph and narrative information.
How your student can prepare for test taking—and what you can do to help?
A student who is well rested and well fed and has a positive attitude about testing is best prepared for testing.
Remind your student to listen to the directions and read each question carefully during testing. Emphasize that
you have confidence in his or her ability to do the best job possible.
The CogAT measures students’ learned
reasoning abilities. CogAT includes three
reasoning batteries-verbal, quantitative, and
non-verbal.
How does the CogAT test differ from the Iowa Assessment?
Unlike achievement tests, such as the Iowa Assessment, the CogAT does not measure how much a student has
learned, but focuses instead on a student’s ability to display cognitive abilities that research has associated with
academic success. The HISD Advanced Academics Department uses the CogAT test results to help identify
academically gifted students.
