Background on Your School Ground

Tree Canada invites your school to participate in the Greening Canada's School
Grounds Program. Tree Canada provide to the selected schools: educational
information, technical advice and financial support up to $3,000 towards the
transformation of their school grounds into environmentally enriched learning
landscapes.
Section A:
Criteria for Funding
School Communities* wishing to participate in the Greening Canada’s School Grounds Program will
be evaluated and funds awarded based on the technical soundness and implementation capability of
a submission including the following documentation:
►A landscape-planting plan.
►A listing of the size, number and variety of trees
and shrubs to be planted (use of native species is
encouraged).
►A maintenance management plan that
demonstrates a commitment to the ongoing care
and maintenance of the trees and other plants used in
the project (including modifying land mowing and
edge trimming patterns).
►Identification of the role of students and other
volunteers in the project.
►An explanation on how the program will increase
public awareness and understanding of the
environmental benefits provided by trees and provide
learning opportunities for the students and the school
community.
►A commitment to and description of a recognition
and promotional program to inform the general public
and members of the school community of the role of
Tree Canada and our Sponsors in assisting the
school to achieve its greening goals.
►A commitment to the planting of the project within
one year of funding approval.
Note 1: Costs for the ongoing care and maintenance
of the trees is the school’s responsibility. These costs
will not be included as part of the cost-sharing.
Note 2: Tree Canada encourages the use of native
species and will not fund the planting or maintenance
of invasive plants. For a list of invasive plants and
why they are such a problem for Canadian
ecosystems please consult the following Environment
Canada website:
www.cws-scf.ec.gc.ca/publications/inv/cont_e.cfm
Note 3: Tree Canada encourages the integration of
trees and shrubs into flowerbeds, in order to keep
edge trimmers and land mowers away from the living
bark of plants.
Tree Canada is looking for projects that propose
innovative, action-oriented ways to educate
Canadians on the environment. Your school
community can contribute to this process.
►A letter of commitment for your greening school
ground project from the School Board.
