cover. Learn how you can improve the carrying capacity of local open areas to
support wildlife. Presentation about endangered species and how wildlife habitat
enhancement can help them survive. Presentation on soil profiles and how natural
compost helps soil. Practical hands-on activities consist of potting a plant to take
home. Activity carries partial credit for BSA and GSA environmental science badges.
(Boy Scouts bring blue cards.)
Endangered Bat and Bird Nesting Boxes: ( 40 min. activity & 10 min. travel )
Old dead hollow trees are quickly disappearing from Tidewater. This is having a
negative effect on several bat and bird species that use such trees for nesting. Learn
about why these species are beneficial and what you can do to create nesting sites
for them. Build a nesting box of your choice to take home for your backyard or mount
in a tree in the HRSD Progress Farm woods. Activity carries partial credit for BSA
and GSA badges related to mammal or bird study or environmental science badges.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour: ( 40 min. activity & 10 min. travel )
Learn how wastewater is collected by the City of Virginia Beach and treated by
HRSD to ensure clean healthy waterways. HRSD plant operators will teach students
about wastewater treatment processes and conduct a tour of the Atlantic Treatment
Plant. Tour includes recycling technologies and programs unique to HRSD.
Laboratory Water Quality Analysis: ( 40 min. activity & 10 min. travel )
Chemists and laboratory technicians will instruct students on how to perform a variety
of EPA standard analytical tests to measure water quality. The importance of each
water quality parameter measured will be discussed. Students will have an
opportunity to practice the various analytical tests with real lab equipment and
samples.
In the event of inclement weather, an indoor program will be held in the Ocean Lakes High
School cafeteria.
