SUMMARY
Fungi
1.
Fungi are living things. e.g. mushrooms and mould
Mushroom
Mould
2.
They grow in places where there is a lot of moisture and can be found almost
everywhere except in places that are too cold or too dry.
3.
Some fungi are useful as they can be eaten or used to produce the food that we eat e.g.
mushrooms, Jew's ears and yeast (a type of fungus which is used in making alcoholic
drinks such as beer and wine, and for making bread swell and become light).
4.
Some fungi are harmful as they can be poisonous or turn food bad e.g. bracket fungi,
puffballs and bread moulds.
5.
Fungi come in various sizes.
Some of them are large enough for us to see, like the mushrooms.
Some fungi, like yeast, are too small to see with the naked eye.
6.
Living things that can only be seen using a microscope are called micro-organisms.
7.
They are not plants. Unlike plants, fungi do not have chlorophyll and therefore
cannot make their own food.
1
8.
They feed on plants and animals, dead or alive. They also feed on things made from
plants or animals.
9.
10.
Fungi break down the food into substances which they then absorb as nutrients.
Most fungi reproduce from spores. The spores are very tiny and light and are easily
carried by the wind.
11.
In mushrooms, the spores are found in the gills. In moulds, the spores are found in
spore cases.
Bacteria
1.
Bacteria are living things, which need air, water and food to stay alive.
2.
They can only be seen under a microscope, hence they are micro-organisms.
3.
Some bacteria are useful. For example, good bacteria can help in our digestion, and
to turn milk into cheese.
4.
Some bacteria are harmful. For example, they may cause us to suffer from sore
throats or they may cause food poisoning.
Fungi and bacteria help to prevent the world from having unwanted
waste by breaking down dead plants and animals.
