• Second-Hand Sunday
Usually takes place in February. It is sort of like a
garage sale with no money involved. It’s a chance to
give away items you no longer want and collect items
you can use from others around CHB for FREE!.
Offload your items by registering your property with
CHB District Council.
Rubbish &
Recycling Guide
• Free Composting Workshop
Usually takes place in February. It includes Bokashi,
Worm Farming and Hot & Cold Composting hosted by
CHB Permaculture Group
• CHB Lions Bookarama
Usually takes place in April/ May. Donate your surplus
books, magazines and puzzles at the advertised drop
off points or phone one of the contact people to have
your books collected.

Classed as special waste, they are accepted at
the CHB Landfill. Contact CHB District Council
on 06-857-8060 to arrange Landfill access.

collections of unused chemicals.

Please keep fat and oil out of the drains.
Prevent blockages - cool fat or oil, then drain
into newspaper or bags and dispose into

Watch out for the free annual Composting
workshop (details under Events).
Organise a worm farm or ask around to see if
anyone needs scraps to feed their animals.
Last resort - put them out in your rubbish or
take to the transfer station.

Take to Second-Hand Stores or give away in
Second-Hand Sunday (under Events). If it’s
too far gone - take it to the transfer station.
Dispose at the transfer station separately as
used for compost (small charge applies) or
set up your own composting at home.

Drop off at the transfer station for FREE
Recycle. Clean and take to a recycling dropoff centre for free. No lids.
These types of glass cannot be recycled in
CHB. Carefully wrap in newspaper and
place in rubbish bags for collections or take
to the transfer station.
Drop off unwanted glasses in good condition
at any optometrist. They are sent around the
world for reuse in developing countries.
Hazardous Waste is any material that is
toxic or corrosive, or would ignite or react.
This must not be put out for collection or
thrown away into the landfill. This includes
agrichemicals, cleansers, garden sprays,
asbestos, pool chemicals and petrol.

When walking around town, beaches or
anywhere in the district - take your litter
home or put it in the bin. BUT if you put
household rubbish in litter bins, you may be
FINED $100!

may be able to help with your medical waste
- there may be a charge. Diabetic and other
needles should be disposed of very carefully
in approved containers.

One person’s trash is another person’s
treasure. Try Schools; Kindies; Kohangas,
have a garage sale or give away in SecondHand Sunday (refer to Events). Freephone
the Waste Exchange on 0800 NO THROW
Return your mobile to any phone retailer or
to CHB District Council for Starship.
Disposable nappies cannot be recycled.
Wrap and dispose in normal rubbish bags.

Oil (motor oil)
Paint
Used oil is collected at the Waipukurau
Transfer Station free of charge and stored
in a storage tank.
Drop off at the Waipukurau Transfer Station.
Where possible, usable paint will be put to
one side for use by the Community and the
remainder transported to the Enviropaints
plant in Otaki to be recycled back into paint.
Introductory Offer - to recycle your paint
$1 per can/pail of paint 4 litres and below
$2 per can/pail of paint above 4 litres

Cardboard
Recycle! Take to a recycling drop-off centre
for FREE! e.g. flyers, glossy magazines,
flattened boxes. If you live in Waipawa or
Waipukurau, put it out with the kerbside
recycling collection.
Plastics
Grades 1-6 plastics are recyclable.
Grades 1-6 and 7
Grade 7 plastics are not recyclable and will
need to be disposed off as waste.

Televisions & small If it is in working order, offer them to friends,
students, or the needy. If broken, could be

Drop off at the transfer station - separate
charge applies i.e. additional to other refuse
charges.
If it is in working order - donate to charitable
