Connections • Students attend two connections classes daily • Please note that connections classes are assigned randomly and they change each quarter We may offer the following connections classes: • Art • Physical Education • Guitar • Business/Keyboarding • Technology • FACS The Transition from Elementary to Middle • • • • Time management • # of Classes/Teachers Organization • • • Turning in assignments on time Check blogs daily Self Advocacy and being accountable Peer Interactions Communication is essential • Students communicate with teachers in addition to parents School Counseling Department • Kathleen Bower • Regina Abernathy • Myesha Davis We are here to serve you… The School Day • School hours are from 9:15am to 4:15am • Homeroom expectation 8:50am-9:10am – what constitutes tardy • Preferred Homeroom arrival by 9:00am • Students may arrive as early as 8:00am and attend IMS (Independent Morning Study) in the cafeteria – quiet study time • NOT BEFORE 8:00am • Car Rider Expectations – refer to letter The School Day cont. • Students will transition a minimum 6 times per day • 3 minutes between classes • Students will attend 2 Connections classes per nine • weeks Students have an option to attend intramurals or IMS in the morning starting at 8:15am • Intramurals start a couple of weeks after school starts – you will receive notice Sample Schedule Grading Scale • 90-100 A • 80-89 B • 74-79 C • 70-73 D • 0-69 F • Students also receive conduct grades based on Classroom behavior – marked in synergy • Conduct grades consist of: • S – Satisfactory • • N – Needs Improvement U – Unsatisfactory Report Cards/Grades • Students receive a report card at the end of each nine weeks • Progress reports are given every at the 4 1/2 weeks mark • Promotion/Retention Guidelines are being reviewed for the district but currently…. • • Students must earn a 70 or better average to pass a class Students who fail three or more classes may be retained • Parents and students may use Synergy to keep track of progress via a secure website Student Agenda • Receive first agenda free • The agendas serve as an assigned textbook • Students carry their agendas at all times while in the • building If an assigned agenda is missing, students are required to replace – currently replacement cost is $10.00 first time and $5.00 each time thereafter. Lockers • All students are assigned a locker • They may have 3 lockers (academic, PE and Band) (if • • • applicable) Students are allowed to go to their lockers only during designated locker breaks in 6th grade Lockers are operated by a combination lock; no additional personal locks are permitted Students may not carry a backpack throughout the building, backpacks should be stored in the locker Attendance • There is a direct relationship between attendance and academic performance • After an absence, students must have a note from home or a doctor’s excuse • Students are responsible for checking with teachers to make up missed work • Make-up work is accepted for credit on a day-forday basis (number of days absent, plus 1 additional day for make up) Discipline in Middle School • Cobb County Code of Conduct • Students can receive ISS (In School Suspension) in middle school • Due process – we speak to students • Campus Officer • When you disagree… Dress Code • All students are required to adhere to the dress code at • • • • Lovinggood The dress code is strictly enforced to promote a safe environment free from distractions to learning Clothing must be tasteful and appropriate for school Students will receive a copy of the dress code which will also printed in the student Agenda Students are required to dress out for physical education classes – shorts, sweats, t-shirts and tennis shoes; there is no PE “uniform” Bullying • All Cobb County schools adhere to a strict policy prohibiting harassment and/or bullying • Students are expected to exhibit good behavior and respect for their teachers and peers at all times • Anti-Bullying protocols are covered with students the first week of school • R.A.P. – How bullying is defined We are a BYOD school Allowed during class for instructional purposes ONLY as directed by teacher Not Allowed in the cafeteria (study hall or lunch), hallways, or any other time not directed by teacher Any device brought to school must have a parent consent form on file with appropriate identification information.
