Be a Healthy Role Model

What you do
makes a difference!
Even small changes will make
a big difference to the kids
around you.
Research shows that kids model their
parents’ eating habits, their attitudes
toward food and their feelings towards
their bodies. Kids also learn how to be
physically active, or inactive, by watching
those around them.
Have fun, make changes together, and
let them help you become a great role
model! Let’s Go! is here to support
you, too! For even more tips around
healthy eating and active living, check

As a parent, or important adult in a child’s
life, there are things you can do to help
them learn healthy habits.

Try new foods!
Eat at least 5 fruits & vegetables each day
A child’s willingness to try different kinds of fruits and veggies increases when they see you
enjoying them, too! Cook together, eat together and make mealtime a family time. The time
you spend together can give you chances to share your thoughts on food and show your kids
how you are eating healthy, too!
Watch your screen time!
Limit your screen time to 2 hours a day or less
Set limits to your own TV, computer and mobile screen viewing. Keep screens out of the
bedroom and plan TV viewing in advance. Come up with a list of fun activities to do as a
family in place of screen time. Keep TV time and meal time separate, and let mobile devices
rest while you eat.
Get moving!
Get at least 1 hour of physical activity every day
Show your kids that you care about your physical fitness and theirs! Gradually increase
your level of physical activity as a family. Go for a walk after dinner. Try to incorporate
physical activity into your daily routines. Walk your kids to school rather than driving.
Find active places and events in your community to be active together.
Drink up!
Avoid all sugary drinks and have water instead
Drink water instead of soda or other sugary drinks. Keeping a water bottle, or bottled
water, on hand can help you! Try adding lemons or cucumbers to your water for some
extra flavor!
