It has been agreed by all staff and Governors at John Davies School

Plover Primary School
A guide for parents!
All staff and Governors have agreed at Plover School that a policy for behaviour is essential. We
believe:







That children should enjoy school and be part of a happy, caring atmosphere.
That children have a right to learn and progress.
That teachers must be able to teach without having to stop for those who misbehave.
That children should be treated with fairness and consistency.
That good work and positive behaviour should be encouraged.
That parents should be involved in and informed about their child’s behaviour.
That bullying and racial intimidation in any form will not be tolerated.
To help us achieve this we have set a few basic rules.
School affirmations make it clear what our aims are for all Plover pupils.
These are applicable not only in terms of behaviour management but impact
in all areas of school life. Our affirmations are:
 We will be positive role models by showing respect and trusting
each other.
 We will develop our individual strengths and investigate our
interests through a curriculum that uses technology to help us.
 We will work together with everyone in our school community.
 We expect to have high quality memorable Teaching and Learning experiences.
 Our environment is safe to explore and learn in and we need to respect it.
 We will be independent learners who are able to overcome challenges to achieve well.
 We will learn how to live happy and healthy lives by making the right choices.
 We always try our best in all areas of our learning even when we find it difficult.
 Everyone in our community is welcomed to learn and celebrate our successes and
achievements as well as those of others.
Our ‘Golden Rules’
The school has adopted a set of Golden Rules that apply in all areas of school life. These are:
 We are gentle. We don’t hurt anybody.
 We are kind and helpful. We do not hurt the feelings of others.
 We work hard. We don’t waste our own or other’s time.
 We listen to people. We don’t interrupt.
 We are honest. We do not cover up the truth.
Children will be rewarded for good behaviour. It is possible for a child to receive a reward every
day
We place the emphasis on encouraging and rewarding good behaviour and acknowledging
genuine efforts to change behaviour for the better. These are slightly different depending upon the
age of the child. However all pupils aim to collect shop credits. For the different Key Stages the
rewards are as follows:
Foundation Stage:
 1 credit for every target or certificate achieved
 1 credit per week for having no crosses in pupil’s diary
Key Stage 1:
 5 stickers earn 1 shop credit
 1 credit for every target achieved
 Maximum of 3 credits per term for effort and good learning behaviours
 In Year 1, 1 credit for having no crosses in pupil’s diary in a week. In Year 2, handing
diary in everyday and having no crosses in it
 A weekly ‘Golden Time’ is in operation lasting approximately 40 minutes. This time
rewards pupils who have shown good learning behaviours throughout the week with a
variety of fun activities.
Key Stage 2:
In Key Stage 2 a team point system operates:
 20 team points equal 1 shop credit
 1 smiley face equals 2 team points
 1 parent signature equals 1 team point per day
Team points are accumulated over the week and handed in on Friday for a running total to be kept.
Shop credits are also awarded for Attendance. At the end of each term the School Shop is held to
enable pupils to spend their school credits.
Fun Afternoon
At the end of each half term a Fun Afternoon will occur for all pupils who have not received an
Incident Report and/or Lunchtime sanctions. Pupils may also miss all or part of the afternoon if
severe disruptive behaviour has occurred or if this has deemed to be an appropriate strategy. This
must be agreed with the Deputy Head and/or Head teacher.
Pupils receiving: 1Incident Report and/or strike will miss 20 minutes of Fun Afternoon.
2 Incident Reports and/or strikes will miss 45 minutes of Fun Afternoon.
3 Incident Reports and/or strikes will miss all of Fun Afternoon.
A half termly Merit Assembly is also held for all classes. Parents are invited and given the
opportunity to celebrate their child’s successful learning behaviours.
However, it may be necessary to sanction children who break any of the school rules or show
poor learning behaviours.
Sanctions for Poor/Inappropriate Behaviour
If a child demonstrates poor and/or inappropriate low level behaviours then a number of
strategies will be tried. These will include praise, encouraging good behaviour and verbal
warnings. However, if a child does not respond to these approaches, then the following sanctions
may be used.
A traffic light or face/ peg system is used in school. This is as follows:
 All children start every new lesson on green.
 If learning behaviours deteriorate a verbal warning is given.
 If these behaviours do not improve the child’s peg is moved to amber and then red if
necessary.
 If the peg remains on red at the end of the lesson then a smiley face is crossed out and a
note made in the child’s diary. If there are 2 incidents in a week the pupil will meet with
the Deputy Head to discuss their behaviour and general learning attitude. If 3 are awarded
an Incident Report will be given
 It is possible to move pupil’s pegs forwards and backwards during each lesson.
 In Key Stage 1 children lose 5 minutes of Golden Time for every red face they accrue in a
week. If children miss more than 15 minutes of Golden Time on more than 1 occasion in
a half term, they will also miss 1 session of Fun Afternoon. The next 15 minutes lost will
also include missing another section of Fun Afternoon and so on.
 In Key Stage 2, if two red faces occur in a morning or an afternoon, then a Grotty will be
given. A Grotty is stamped in the child’s diary so that parents are aware. The child will
also meet with the Deputy Head.
An Incident Report will also be completed for any child who is guilty of any serious/frequent
breaches of discipline.
Serious breaches may include:
 bullying, whether verbal, physical or emotional;
 racism, whether by word, action or attitude;
 fighting or deliberately hurting others;
 swearing or bad language;
 disobedience and refusal to co-operate;
 leaving the classroom/ school site or designated place of safety;
 stealing;
 causing a lesson to be unteachable.
A copy of this report will be sent to the parents and Head teacher. The class teacher will keep a
copy of the report in an incident log book alongside any other relevant information. Any violent
incidents must also be recorded in the Violent Incidents Log.
The following sanctions will apply to children where an incident report form has been completed.
The time period will generally be termly, but this timeline may change depending upon the
behaviour of the child and/ or circumstances.
 3 incident reports: meeting with parent(s) and classteacher;
 6 incident reports: meeting with parent(s) and classteacher & Key stage Co-ordinator;
 9 incident reports: meeting with parent(s) and class teacher &Head teacher.
At this point a formal warning of exclusion or a fixed term/ permanent exclusion maybe
considered appropriate. After 6 incidents Behaviour Books or Individual Behaviour Plans may be
appropriate.
Uniform
All children are expected to wear the full school uniform. Please ensure it is named and that your
child looks after it. Shoes must be safe, sensible and black (black trainers are also allowed). A
change of clothes for PE is necessary for the health and safety of your child. This should be left at
school and only taken home for washing.
Mobile phones and eating sweets, chewing gum and confectionary are not allowed in school.
Seeking Your Support
We want to know at an early stage of any concerns you or your child may have and put things
right as soon as possible. We undertake to investigate any issues as soon as we can and report
back to you.
Parents are encouraged to telephone, write or put a note in their child’s Communication Books in
order to bring something to our attention. We also enjoy hearing about children’s achievements
out of school and any news they may have.
We believe that parents will want to support the school’s Behaviour Policy. We would value any
comments you have and welcome your involvement in your child’s education. Please discuss our
Behaviour Policy with your child. Members of staff will be happy to discuss any aspect of the
policy with you.
