Update on conservation activities in
Kenya
Magadi Area
The first area in Magadi was found to be
unsuitable for our process because there
were no easily developed dam sites, and
geotechnical indications were that if we
sank a borehole in this area the water
would have a very high soda content, so
we have been looking for a more
favorable location in this Magadi area.
First location in Magadi
Second Location, Magadi Area
The second location in the Magadi area is on the
Uaso Nyiro River, near the Shompoli Conservation
Area, and being on the river which never dries up,
will be an ideal location for a tree nursery,
demonstration area and community training facility .
The engagement has begun with the CBO in this area,
and we have employed a representative from this
community to move the process forwards towards a
start up date in the last quarter of 2007. The proximity
of water will enable this project to be of a much
greater magnitude than possible in the first location.
Second Location ,Magadi Area
Eastern Aberdares, Kandara

We moved our operations to the Eastern
Aberdares, from Gatamayu in the south, to
Kandara at the request of the Tana and Athi
River Development Authority, because it is
the catchments area for the Tana and Athi
Rivers, two of Kenya’s largest rivers, and
source of all our hydro power, therefore a
very important location for us to attend to
as a matter of priority.

Lake Victoria
We have a project location
identified on the shores of
Lake Victoria, where rivers
have dried up as a result of
deforestation, resulting in
the lake level dropping 1,5
meters in the last decade.
It is intended to start a
regional intervention from
this location that would
involve Tanzania and
Uganda.
Consequences of deforestation and over grazing
Gulley erosion around the
lake as a result of
environmental degradation
is becoming more frequent
and increasingly damaging,
as seen in this photograph
taken in the Homa Bay area.
Our nitrogen fixing trees are
perfectly suited to restoring
and stabilizing degraded
soils .

Residents of the lower Tana
The Pokomo and Orma people of this region live in classic bee hive
huts, and have suffered considerably from the devastating drought of
2005.

Carbon credit assessment


We are actively assessing our carbon credit
generation potential, both for communities and
for commercial forestry, to enhance Africa’s
potential to be one of the worlds largest carbon
sinks.
This year, 2007, will see the expansion of the
Trusts activities into new areas with new
communities.
In conclusion




The Africa Conservation Trust is perfectly
placed in terms of the right programs at the
right time to generate sustainable rural
development from conservation through
wealth creation.
