The RAS of NSW Education team will be hosting a Primary and Secondary Teacher Professional Development Session during the 2017 Show that will give an inspiring and engaging overview on how to incorporate agriculture into your classroom! Primary Teachers are invited to participate in a specialised workshop from 10:30am till 12pm, 11th April 2017. While Secondary Teachers will have a workshop aimed at Stages 4 & 5 at 10:30am till 12pm, on April 12, 2017. Programs aim to support teachers introducing agriculture and sustainability into the classroom. The Teacher Professional Development Workshop will see you: •Go on an exclusive “behind-the-scenes” tour of The Dairy Farmers Working Dairy •Hear from teachers and schools who are championing agriculture and sustainability •Interact with industry resources and network with agricultural professionals •Develop skills for STEM project planning. There will be something in it for everyone – even the family! For every teacher who has registered and paid for their ticket at $16.50 each, they will be met at the Entry Gate and given 2 x FREE entry tickets to the Show (all other party members must purchase a valid entry ticket). Your guests can join in for the first 30 minute Behindthe-Scene Dairy tour and then head out and enjoy the Show while teachers knuckle down for an hour! MEET THE TEAM: BEC REYES Bec Reyes Assistant, Agricultural Development is our team all-rounder. Bec’s role is to support all members of the team in whatever they may need. Working closely with the education coordinator on the schools program, Bec will be your main contact for all things Show related. Bec has been in the Easter Show family for a number of years and she is the team’s Arts, Crafts, Dance, Physie and Fashion specialist. In her spare time you’ll probably find Bec teaching her city pals about all things agriculture – she is our number one city gal turned Ag-vocate! When: 10am till 12pm. Contact: [email protected] (02) 9704 1147 Find out more IN FOCUS: AGRICULTURE AND FOOD IN THE CLASSROOM On January 25th the RAS Education team had a great day at Bondi facilitating our first Primary School BOSTES approved Teacher Professional Development Course. We were hosted by Montessori East in Bondi who were delighted to welcome us and our chickens who came to help teachers learn firsthand how to best handle chooks! Teachers learnt all about the poultry industry, keeping chickens in metro schools, ideas for STEM and Project Based Learning, incorporating agriculture into programing and tips on assessment and evaluation. Miss Baaa The level of engagement and high-order questioning from teachers was fantastic and we have received excellent feedback from the day. •‘The wealth of resources provided and described was incredible. The information was so carefully conveyed and detailed’ •‘The most useful sessions of the day had to be questioning techniques to help begin our project planning and the information around poultry and the best way to incorporate the industry into our schools.’ The RAS Education team run Teacher Professional Development courses yearround. NESTLE HEALTHY ACTIVE KIDS COOKING CHEESE APPRECIATION WORKSHOP Discover where your food comes from and how it gets to your plate. Students will have the opportunity to show-off their culinary skills when they participate in a free cooking class where they can enjoy their creations! Join in the dairy fun with an interactive cheese making and tasting workshop! Students will try their hand at cheesemaking, taste-test a number of different cheese varieties and learn all about the methods that make every cheese different! Years 1-6 (over 6yrs) Years 7 -12 SHEEP SHEARING Our champion shearers delight and amaze their audiences, not only with their incredibly fast shearing but with their knowledge and humour. Students will see shearers using both traditional hand shears alongside today’s high-tech equipment. Years K-12 NATURAL FIBRE FASHION PARADE Learn about Australia’s diverse range of sustainably produced natural fibres at the Natural Fibre Fashion Parade. See fibres such as wool, cotton, mohair and alpaca, learn about the fibre processing and watch as the final product is paraded down the catwalk! Years 8-12 HORSE EXPERIENCE The Horse Experience gives show-goers an opportunity to interact with horses and their owner’s who will be on-hand to answer questions and talk about the many aspects of owning a horse. The indoor demonstration ring has fun and educational sessions ranging from horse handling skills to whip making and horse nutrition. Years 9-12 BONNIE YARD DOGS Find out just how agile and clever dogs can be – these working sheep dogs are experts in moving sheep. See a man’s best friend at work! Years K-12 CHOOK-WASHING DEMONSTRATION Learn about all things poultry and what it really takes to go home as Champion Chook from the Sydney Royal Easter Show! Students learn about the basics of poultry and poultry keeping and our experienced commentators will step you through the process of preparing for the Show! Years K-12 CATTLE EXPERIENCE Interactive cattle demonstrations look at all things beef! Our demonstrators help students understand the key areas of cattle husbandry, production and management – can you be a beef farmer?! Years 7-12 CAREERS AND COURSES IN AGRICULTURE! On Wednesday, 5th April 2017, the Easter Show and TAFE NSW Western Sydney Institute host the Career Readiness Taster Workshops. They are free for all secondary students and are a great way to participate in interactive, engaging and educational workshops whilst already onsite for competitions such as Schools Steer Competition and Poultry, Sheep, and Pig penning/bump-in. Workshops include: horse health, cattle assessment, how to train a working dog, livestock nutrition/grains and rural machine maintenance. Click here for more information THE AWI NATIONAL MERINO CHALLENGE The AWI National Merino Challenge (NMC) is a two-day, national competition which improves the engagement of young people with the Merino industry by developing their knowledge and skills. It offers a fantastic opportunity for young people to network with like-minded individuals and creates opportunities and pathways into the wool industry. ARE YOU PLANNING TO STUDY AT TAFE OR AN ACCREDITED VET INSTITUTION IN 2017? The RAS Foundation is calling for applications to our Vocational Education & Training (VET) Scholarships. VET Scholarships are available to students studying at registered training organisations including TAFE and local colleges and support individuals in NSW who demonstrate a commitment to a career that will ensure the future success of rural and regional NSW. Perhaps you are planning to study a Certificate in Agriculture, Community Services or Wool Classing? If so, this scholarship could be for you. Scholarships of up to $5,000 for full-time study or up to $2,500 for part-time study in 2017 are available.
