CONTACTS: Shannon Ross, Reading Terminal – 215.922.2317 Jeff Bundy, WHYY – 215.351.2381 WHYY AND BASSETT’S ICE CREAM TO UNVEIL “THE WHYY EXPERIENCE” ICE CREAM AT THE ULTIMATE PHILADELPHIA ICE CREAM FESTIVAL SATURDAY, JULY 12 FROM 10:00 A.M. TO 4:00 P.M. Philadelphia (June 25, 2008) – Celebrate National Ice Cream Month with WHYY and Bassetts Ice Cream, during The Ultimate Philadelphia Ice Cream Festival on Saturday, July 12th from 10 am – 4pm. For this event, Bassetts Ice Cream, the oldest vendor in Philadelphia’s historic Reading Terminal Market, joins forces with local public broadcasting station, WHYY and Philadelphia’s leading independent frozen dessert artisans (The Franklin Fountain, Chilly Philly Ice Cream, Fisher’s Ice Cream, Bellissimo Gelato and Sorbet, and Georgeo’s Italian Ice) for a day of frozen fun at the height of summer featuring demonstrations, games, contests, tastings, music, and more! A main highlight of this year’s event is the unveiling of Bassetts’ newest ice cream creation, “The WHYY Experience!” To create this new flavor, Bassetts partnered with WHYY to create a new flavor by asking WHYY’s audience to submit their ideas for a WHYY themed ice cream flavor. From those entries, WHYY and Bassetts selected five finalists, which were then voted on by WHYY audience members. With more than 9,500 votes cast in the contest, the winning flavor, submitted by Sean O’Halloran of Oreland, PA, is a scrumptious blend of Bassetts vanilla ice cream, chocolate covered pretzel pieces, and a smooth ribbon of rich butterscotch. WHYY and Bassetts will be distributing FREE samples of the flavor during the Ice Cream Festival. WHYY’s award-winning Children’s Service will also be on hand with games, activities and complimentary books for kids (while supplies last). And if that weren’t enough, WHYY has also arranged for a visit from everyone’s favorite canine, Clifford the Big Red Dog! Other featured highlights include an assortment of ice cream themed games including an ice cream eating contest, high scoop relay race, the wacky flavor guessing contest, and a root beer float drop contest. Chef Robert Bennett of Bellissimo will demonstrate how to make an ice cream dessert, and Bassetts Ice Cream will bring along their ice cream memorabilia collection. A children’s corner with ice cream related crafts will round out the activities. All participating frozen dessert vendors will have their product for sale during the event, with sample size portions available for either $1 or $2.
